Americans were in general from the lower classes as they left Europe for a better life so their expressions are not of the upper class. The expressions are more down to earth. Golly, Jeez, hunkiedorie, whatchacallit, thingamjig, contraption, goop, etc. More recent ones from TV d'oh, and gah.
