@edgarblythe,
I know, edgar, I know ...
I think the NYT was very short-sighted & dumb about what it allowed to happen to Abuzz.
Sigh.
But that was then & here we all are now.
So, moving right along ...
As I said earlier:
Quote:So, are we all done then?
Oh I certainly hope not!
What can I do to persuade the shyer & the more evasive A2K members to post here?
Perhaps a bit of bribery? (Thinking, thinking ...)
Aw, go on, have your say!
@msolga,

What is very interesting is that they now claim that they want to build what they had a good start building with Abuzz all those years ago...they want people to be emotionally involved with their web presence, they think that if they can build that connection that they can then charge for it. I doubt it, because we dont need to pay for either news nor connections on the web, but at any rate if that is the theory then they should have invested in the Abuzz community, not abandoned it.

PM them and ask if they will contribute.
@engineer,
But that might seem a rather intimidating or demanding thing, to some people, engineer ?
I would really hate anyone to feel pressured to do something they'd rather not do.
I'm just trying to encourage posters, that's all.

@msolga,
It probably would be (you don't see me doing it and there are several people I'd like to know more about) but you've probably gotten all the attention for this thread you are likely to get without some level of advertising and all advertising is at some level intrusive. I think this is a great thread and I have learned some interesting backstories so the question is whether the mild intrusion of a participation request would be offset by the benefit of exposing more people to such a wonderful thread. I'll have to model that out and get back to you.
@engineer,
There are some folk, engineer, who I would dearly love to hear from ... for them to share their experiences here & their thoughts ...
And they
never participate in threads like this one.
Which frustrates the hell out of me, I can tell you!
But yes, I agree with you.
There have been some terrific posts here.
I have genuinely found them a very interesting read.
I'm another refugee from Abuzz. I first saw a link to that forum from the
Boston Globe's website. Someone had asked whether I knew of any good
places in Boston to watch international soccer matches, so I assume the
identity of SoccerGeorge and posted that question. Then I started poking
around the forum, asking, answering, and making the occasional off-the-
wall comment. It was fun. It still is.
At first I naively participated in discussions of religion, but those just
seemed to get too ugly too fast. I still get suckered in once in a while,
but I'm a lot more careful.
One day I came across a question about Latin. It had been a long time
since I'd studied the language, but I took a shot at translating it. Then
more requests showed up and I tackled them. I've been doing it ever
since. That's a very pleasant part of A2K for me. Not too many knock-
down drag-out Latin fights. And many questioners actually post back
to thank you.
I've had the pleasure of meeting some of our members in person,
sharing food and drink, providing a lift, jogging and racing. They've
all been great folks.
I've mourned the passing of Joanne Dorel, Cavfancier, Timberlandko,
and Noddy. Requiescant in pace. Noddy's death hit me hardest, since
I'd met her when see visited Boston.
The format changes haven't affected me much. The real heart and soul
of A2K is the cast of characters who post here. We gain some, we lose
some, but there is a certain A2K spirit that persists.
See ya round the forum.

I wonder how many of your Latin translations have been tattooed onto the bodies of America's youth. You have the ability to cause great mischief, you know.
@joefromchicago,
George is responsible for making many teenagers happy (not sure if their parents were happy). But parents should be reassured that their kids have an interest in classical languages.

Sadly, no one has posted a picture of my text needled into his or her
epidermis.

Well, that's one way of describing a request for "What the ****?" in Latin.
(I had no idea how to translate that, by the way.)
@George,
I wonder if you could make money george.
advertise your latin translation service send a flyer to tattoo parlours across America. Charge $5.00 /word. email me the words and I'll email back within 24 hrs.

Wouldn't the translation be
Quo Vadis?
@George,
Not one of yours, I trust.

I missed this thread and I'm one of the shyer ones. OTOH I can be bribed
@electronicmail,
OK, consider yourself bribed.
Please proceed now ...
@msolga,
Thank you. I'm trying to overcome my natural shyness and reticence.
I'll come back and post if I succeed in that effort.
