Common goals, awareness of oneself and an understanding of you partner. It helps for both partners to have had good role models and/or parents that had happy marriages as well.

I think dadpad had it right. Trust and communication. The only other thing I would add is that whenever things get a little rough (and they will), never let yourself forget why you got married to begin with and hold on to that.

staying single, a few women i've been interested in and dated are happily married (to someone else)
i also know a few folks who have 20+ years unmarried together who seem to be quite happy, legally they're joined by kids, businesses, property, just not a ceremony of any kind

It seems to me that the original question is overly broad? It is kind of like asking "what makes good music".
The answer, of course, depends on what makes the two people involved happy.
