As I recall a fighter aircraft cost about $17,000 per hour to operate
Thats a very cheap fighter.....I think you have to multiply that by something between 5 to 10 . That price is closer to the bigger helicopters . Fighters are far more expensive .

See here

Quote:
1 x Tomahawk cruise missile = $1,500,000 (192 missiles fired to Libya)

1 x JDAM guiding a 2000-lb BLU-109 bomb = $61,000 (45 bombs dropped by B-2s)

1 x F-15E = $79,000,000 (One crashed during the operations)

Aircraft Operating Costs

Boeing KC-135 tanker aircraft = $11,673/hr (USAF sent 4 aircraft to assist in aerial refueling)

Northrop Grumman B-2 Stealth Bomber = $88,000/hr (3 were involved in Libya operations)

Lockheed Martin AC-130 Gunship = $12.899/hr

Fairchild Republic A-10 = $8,946/hr

Boeing F-15E = $20,516/hr

Lockheed Martin F-16C = $9,936/hr (No wonder it's so popular around the world. Best bang for the buck!)

The AV-8B Harrier = $11,134/hr

Boeing EA-18 Growler jammer jets = $10,662/hr

By the way, the cost of running only the three U.S. navy submarines that were involed (USS Providence, USS Scranton and USS Florida) for the first 10 days of the operation cost $27,900,000.

@hawkeye10,
The prices we spend on weapons are vulgar to the extreme when many people in our country are struggling to make ends meet, and we are cutting school funding.

Why do we always elect bad people and losers into our government?

Obama and Michelle made over $1 million in 2010; they are immune to the sufferings of the average American; many losing their jobs and homes, while he wastes money on weaponry in a country where we don't belong.

I guess we are doomed to mediocrity.

@hawkeye10,
Operating costs are a secret unless publicly released . What you have are doctored figures . Do those costs per hour include maintenance, fuel, spare parts, a portion of the supply system, the contracting costs for repairs of parts, the hastening of AOG parts, an estimate of the initial cost of the aircraft over its expected life, the cost of training aportioned over the life, inactive costs of maintenance and aircrew whilst not performing their primary tasks....and other miscellaneous costs ? I can not give specific costs, but old helicopters like the Iroquois were about a third of that cost, the Blackhawk would be about half and the Chinook would be approximately that cost .

I still maintain the real cost would be somewhere between 5 to 10 times that quoted . Actually I know exactly what it is, but I cant tell you unless I kill you afterwards . Very Happy

I fully understand the governments poor record on both cost projection and overall honesty, but these are the best numbers that we have to work with. They dont include basing costs or labor costs I believe, they are only the direct cost differentials between flying them for a hour and not flying them for that hour, so far as I understand. You can leave it in the hanger all day, but that does not mean that having it there ready for operations costs nothing, as these numbers assume.

to what do you refer? As I recall a fighter aircraft cost about $17,000 per hour to operate, more if it shoots or drops anything.
I refer to the futility of fighting a people, or a religion with an army... Armies are made to fight armies, people who are organized, who stand their ground and fight... Until some method can be found to apply absolute terror to people, or destroy them utterly without fear of war crimes prosecution, we do not have a prayer of stopping our current enemies...

Democracy is a defensive for of social organization... With every offensive weapons system we go broke to have we prove how far we are from democracy... Defense is the least expensive form of warfare in men and materials... It requires that each person think and act for themselves, and that is exactly what our government most fears...

I am with you...I have pointed out in multiple threads how the federal government is running over the people, how we have lost a great deal of our freedom.

You may not see the relationship just yet, but the reason we are struggling here is because we have no rights, because if we had rights we would not be dispossed of all our property and wealth... Think only of the point of wages... If we had the right to demand fair wages for fair work would we not all be richer and better off... If we had democracy, could we not make our government represent our needs to the employing class??? Could we not defend ourselves from the preditors within who use us as slaves and prevent the government from protecting us if we had democracy??? Whose interests are we defening abroad when defense is so much cheaper??? Whose enemies are we making with our army, and for whose benefits, and who will pay the cost... We bear the war, and we pay for it as well....The enemies we make we will not shake short of offering up the very people who have sung us into war... They need to die like the criminals they are...

The blind often do look like idiots, but in our case we seem blind because we believe in the old form of our government even while it fails us... WE are at the point where we must destroy it, and bury it to keep it from destroying us...

That's the best idea yet, but how do "we" go about destroying it? I betcha the next election just repeats what we already have; nincompoops.

The best defense against forms such as we have that put so much into the defense of themselves and nothing into the defense of our rights is simple passive resistence... Disenthrall yourself, and disenthrall others... Work, think, and dream for a new form to achieve the very goals our revolution and constitution have so long ignored... Build new forms of relationship guided by justice...

Obama OKs Drone Missions in Libya

President signs off on the use of two Predator drones in Libya to pick off targets in urban areas,
despite administration saying the U.S. is not at war with Libya and has not chosen sides in the conflict.

Between our airforce and the European Boots on the ground and our CIA boots on the ground we should be able to lick Gadhaffi. I mean according to our leaders he is a lunatic, and the Libyans do not support him, so how hard can this be?
