@roger,
Perception is reality......we seem to be pissing them off as much as we would have had we done nothing, so I would like an explanation for what we bought with our soon to be $1 billion.

Frustration was growing among residents in Misrata, where Gadhafi’s troops have intensified their long siege of the city in recent days. The doctor sharply criticized NATO for failing to break the assault with its month-old campaign of airstrikes.

“We have not seen any protection of civilians,” the doctor said. “NATO airstrikes are not enough, and the proof is that there are civilians killed every day here,” he said.

The theme was echoed in the rebel stronghold of Benghazi, where spokesman Abdel-Hafidh Ghoga told a news conference: “There’s no more room for hesitation or for not standing with determination against what is happening in Misrata and other Libyan cities, because the destruction that Moammar Gadhafi is causing in Libyan cities is great and extensive.”

The rookie mistake of over promising and under delivering seems to be quite the norm for the professor....and I do blame Obama, because he was the only person on earth who had the sole power to prevent this.
The point was about bloodshed, and there we lie... We do not care how many have to die so long as we end up with some essential margin of control in their society...

What you say may have some truth to it; but it is easier to manage perception in this country than abroad, and no one can say their level of anger and humiliation is ever over until they are dead... You cannot make them love you, but if you kill them it will not matter... Where we are at historically is this: Victory is never complete and must always be bought at too dear a price.... There is no conclusion to it... The result of throwing more weapons and money at every situation is to have to throw more weapons and violence at it... We are finding the price of empire... We are England's little bully boy; and it is costing us far more than it ever cost them...

@Fido,
So much truth in what you say. We are able spend billions on bombs, but can't spend more money for our schools. Tuition at California universities are increasing by double-digits, and class sizes of grade schools are also increasing. All while our infrastructure goes to pot.

Our people in government are too stupid to see the obvious.

in a state of denial or misled is not stupid; but the end result is the same, that we will be faced with a choice between defeat as a nation or revolution... I picked revolution a long time ago...

@Fido,
What really gets my goat is the simple fact that politicians are talking about cutting more government spending, but defense spending is a sacred cow while they fight against more taxes for the rich. We don't need enemies to drop bombs in the US, we're doing a yeoman's job of destroying our country all by ourselves! It's called implosion.

@cicerone imposter,
I agree with most of those posting, and you too, CI, but we are the people who make our government work, so we as a population ultimately bear the results of our own choices. I'm laggard on this myself, posting here instead of writing letters to my congressional folks. I used to be much better at this back when I knew my assemblywoman and state senator in person - they knew my views.

@ossobuco,
I used to write to my congresswoman, but she "never" agreed with any of my position - including not to go to war in Iraq. I gave up communicating with her after she chose to ignore my recommendations on so many important issues. It turned out she was wrong on "all" of them.

@Renaldo Dubois,
One politician per family is plenty enough! Besides, when I retired in 1998, I promised myself to only work on things I enjoy - like world travel.

I'm very happy right where I'm at. I really don't have a desire to travel the world. Can't go to Mexico. Canada is still a little free as long as you keep your mouth shut. Phillipines are okay I guess. I'm in the great Northwest and I still haven't seen everything.

WE??? Are you pregnant, or do you have a mouse in your pocket??? Most of us would love nothing better than to see the country survive and prosper... Those few who use their money to influence government, but will not pay their due taxes with it are robbing the idea of nation of all its meaning... Do you think victory abroad is going to mean squat if we suffer one long defeat at home for it??? Do you think money will mean anything when the rich have it all... Do you think liberty will mean anything when we are all controlled in a police state... Jefferson said enough on the subject... No one likes to change their forms, but when necessity threatense we must threaten necessity right back, if we are still human....those who are demoralized, who have given up are an impediment to all of us... Since we cannot change the government we must change the form of government, not because it is fun, but because it has no meaning, and because we find it necessary...

Many rich folks, really... No one gets a chance at office without proving oneself corruptable... A dirty soul is the key to office...

My Boehner doesn't have one either, or a brain, or a conscience, or a sense of smell, thank God.... If the republicans can elect a guy with that name what is next... Lick Spittle would be a good name; or Jack Mehoff... I think they just like the image of it... There is something about the sex drive and the death wish that really appeals to them... And now they have their Boehner to stick to all the liberals.... Bend over America: This isn't going to hurt him a bit...

We are showing the world how many times we can swat a fly with a billion dollar a day fly swatter without hitting anything but our own heads...

to what do you refer? As I recall a fighter aircraft cost about $17,000 per hour to operate, more if it shoots or drops anything.
