I'm reading a novel named Secret Daughter. In the previous plot, Somer found she could not have a baby. And now She is talking with her mother to explain.
“No.” Somer shakes her head. “I can’t. We went to a specialist for tests. I’m going through early menopause. My ovaries aren’t producing eggs anymore.” Somer looks in her mother’s eyes for the explanation she has not been able to find anywhere else, and sees them well with tears.
What does the last sentence mean here, expecially the expression " looks in her mother’s eyes for the explanation she has not been able to find anywhere else" and whose eyes were filled with tears?
It appears that Somer expects that her mother can provide an explanation which is not available to her (Somer) merely through physical examinations by specialist physicians. The implication of seeing tears in her mother's eyes is that her mother can tell something which the doctors have so far been unable to tell her.
@PennyChan,
Also, I think she trusts her mother more than anyone else and feels her mother must know everything that combines to make her daughter. Her mother's tears show how much emotional pain she feels for her daughter's problem. Somer will be denied the joy and fulfilment of being a mother. It is heartbreaking for Somer's mother to know this and not be able to solve the problem for her.
