"Vows commit us to the work ahead, psychological and spiritual. They insist we cultivate mercy and awareness. That we do the work it takes to offer all we are."
- Stephen and Ondrea Levine, Embracing the Beloved.

What's the meaning of the last sentence? What is "the work"? What does "all we are" mean?

"The work" is whatever is required to "offer all we are."

"All we are" seems to refer to the realization of our maximum potential.

The "work" is how we implement the vows, psychologically and spiritually. It's what we have to do to keep our vow to one another. Because this is not easy, it may seem like "work" or a "task.'

(these vows require us to ) cultivate mercy and awareness.

That we do the work it takes to offer all we are." sounds like a phrase added to the last sentence. It is a continuation of the previous thought.

It could have been said: These vows make it necessary for us to cultivate mercy and awareness and to do the work it takes to be able to give of ourselves to another completely.
