I opened the cage. The parrot flew out right away.
In joining the sentences are the words in bold needed?

The parrot flew out right away as soon as I opened the cage.

I would say no, they are not needed.

The parrot flew out right away when I opened the cage.

You are replacing "right away" with "as soon."
