Moved beyond _______, Josh tried desperately to ________ the lump in his throat. He helped the youngster upright the wheelchair and the two of them lifted his brother back into the wheelchair.

I think the first blank should be fill in by 'words' and the second by 'swallow'. Does it make sense?

@tanguatlay,
First as you say could be words, (or tears) and the second swallow (or clear).
I would be more inclined to use clear in the second instance, but it's purely a personal choice.

lump in one's throat, a tight or uncomfortable feeling in the throat, as a reaction to an emotion.
