Mom put down the brush in her hand. She looked at herself in the mirror, and I saw that it cost her something to stand up.

What does "it cost her something to stand up" mean here? Does it mean "managed to stand up"?

This phrase is a little strange out of context.

It might make sense if the Mom has an injury or a physical disability meaning it "cost" (i.e. caused pain) for her to stand up. If this is the case, it is a poetic way of saying this.
