It is in the very middle of winter, snow on the sidewalks, husbands and brothers and fathers heading off to war.

What does "head off to war" mean here?

Leave to go to war. 'Head off' is a very common expression - for example, 'I'm just heading off to the shops now I'll be back soon'.
