Woodside was not far from the banal concrete sprawl of Silicon Valley but at least it felt isolated and remote.

What does " the banal concrete sprawl "mean here?

lotsa concrete, lotsa strip malls, lotsa undistinguished businesses and buildings and home, just mile after mile of buildings that are totally anonymous and interchangeable, a lot of it but instantly forgettable.
