Yes, as jln says it's good and it's interesting and you
should continue. Playing with textures is good and if you learn to glaze one colour thinly over another so it shines through a bit like stained glass - you'll get colours it's impossible to name or create from mixing.
Warning: it is terribly addictive
Cryla paper (comes in pads in various sizes, including pretty big), is another cheap way of working with acrylics, The paper has a canvas-like texture and is primed so it doesn't buckle and warp with wet paint.

I look at some of these hardy painters in Canada and North America who paint out in the snow and think NO WAY to that! I do draw the line at that degree of cold and snow.
