It was a challenging job, but I grew to enjoy it immensely. I announced music to thousands of listeners in Salt Lake City and throughout Utah. In addition to announcing music and taking requests, I held contests, awarding free tickets "to the third caller." I recorded and aired public service and promotional announcements.
What does "the third caller" mean here? Does it mean that the person is the third one to call the DJ? But why did the DJ award the guy?

Yes. It was a fairly common promotion back when I was listening to radio. I suppose they still do it. I think it was simply to motivate people to listen to their station. Advertising revenues largely depend on the number of listeners.
The same is true of most magazines, by the way. The price of a yearly subscription is very often less than the cost of producing and distributing the magazine.
