Anyone bought a vacuum cleaner lately?

We've got a not too old (5 years, maybe) Sears canister model that is no longer working. I've found a repair center and will take it in for an estimate but I'm thinking we'll be asking Santa for a new vacuum cleaner for Christmas.

I have low-pile carpeting including on the stairways.

Any suggestions? Anything to avoid?

@JPB,
Dysons are overhyped and overrated. Especially the Animal model.

@JPB,
I have a Sandia Raven vacuum and I love it even though it's heavy and a bit cumbersome. It's fab. And it's cheaper than a Dyson: http://www.janilink.com/product_info.php?products_id=14228

I always had cheap vacuums. A few years back, I bought a Miele. It is the first vacuum that is worth the money.

I have a dyson, no problems with it. Best one I've ever owned.

We have an Oreck, our second. Love it because it so light weight.

I am very hard on vacuums.
I use them at work and at home.

So far, out of all of the brands I have used, including dyson, the best is Emer.

This is the one I own right now. I do not think i will ever go with another one.
I have had it for over a year. Found it for 58.00 on Amazon . Love it.

I have a Miele too, like POM. Works perfectly for the last 8 years -
no problem whatsoever. It's not the cheapest though.

@CalamityJane,
No, It's not cheap. I worked for WIlliamsSonoma when I bought mine, so I bought it at a discount. I had to wait a few years to afford it, but, then, during that time, it was my only job.

A glimpse at Overstock.com might be in order.

I also bought a Miele - not the $1200 model but the $650 one. I love it! Light, great suction, not too loud... really I love it.

@Mame,
Mine had to have been purchased before 2002 and its retail price then was probably $450.

BTW, I did check Overstock.com which has three internet pages of vacuums. LEading the way are Dyson's that have been rebuilt.

Thanks, all.

Meile sounds like a good one. I agree that Dysons are Way Too Expensive.

Never heard of Emer, but that brings up the whole question of bag vs bagless. The one person I know with a bagless system says it's great but that emptying the dust bin is a messy proposition.

Thoughts from those with bagless vacuums? Would you go bagless the next time around?

@boomerang,
Never heard of Sandia Raven either, but it looks intriguing. Is it heavy on your back?

@JPB,
Sadias are more of a professional vacuum -- they're used by a lot of floor refinishers and installers -- so you really don't hear about them in the consumer market much. It picks up everything and it really gets close to the walls and into corners easily.

It weighs about 5 pounds but it's big. We have some smallish rooms and when using the long handle it can get tricky turning around, I bump into a lot of stuff. It took me a while to master it but it was worth it.

The price is really good too when you compare it to other vacuums.

@JPB,
I probably should add that it might not be as easy to find bags, etc. than it would be for consumer vacuums.

Also, I would never have a bagless vacuum. I had one once and hated it. It seemed to get really stinky.

nope
nope
nope

If I had the funds I'd go with Miele. Especially if you've got a dealer reasonably nearby.

@JPB,
Only 1 you need is a Dyson, 5 years guarantee, no dust bag causing decline in sucktion power ..Dyson!

Only slightly annoying thing is the mouth parts, attached to the machine can fall off if you bump them.
