I read a word in a book I was reading and cannot seem to find the official translation anywhere. "Khudaya" was the word. I'd be very appreciative if someone could translate it for me!

Are you sure it's a Russian term?

The word exists in Farsi and Hindi (indicates a god or a divinity)..

But poor is бедных and it sounds bednyh (betin)..

could be ukrainian. chuda means thin, can also mean poor in some contexts.

But found it: Khudaya is the Russian word for lean in the feminine form.

It has secondary meanings, check here: худой , худа́я

...and that can often take on meaning of 'poor' as well, in slavic languages. czech, for example.
