When someone tells you how bad he/she is feeling and there are distorted thinking errors in his/her mind which causes his/her bad feelings. You have two options. One is to correct his/her distorted thinking, one is to genuinely empathize his/her feelings. In order to help him/her, which is better?
@stevenya,
They are not mutually exclusive.
Listen to the person.
Then gentlely say, "I don't remember it that way. Can I share with you how I remember the events?
There's his version, your version, then there is the truth.
@stevenya,
A wise man once said that we must first remove the obstruction from our own eye before we imagine that we are doctors.
