We do Michigan in summer and Florida in winter. Always on the water.

But I live in California, and this is a state you just have to visit, and more than once because it is so huge.

In your lifetime you should spend a week in southern CA and another week in northern CA.

I love to visit California, because it has 'everything.' Ocean, forests, lakes, mountains, snow, and the wine countries. Wink c.i.

Oh, God, am I going to have to pull out some photos of Washington? I thought those pics of yours, Orglif, were Washington! The first of these is of an area in the Cascades (Alpine Lakes), the second is from Olympic National Park (Home Sweet Home) and the third is the town where I live, and yes, Mt. Rainier is nearly as close as it looks. We've got the mountains and the water! But nevermind, I am also very fond of the Rockies. I don't know which is more gorgeous, Glacier or Yellowstone National Parks.

Pueo -- I am sorry, but I did not notice your saying that the Io Needle Valley was one of your favorite places. I can't imagine it at night because it did seem sort of spooky. Whenever I think of it I think of an agave plant whose leaves had been carved "Ernie and Pua Skabialka Forever." And so it goes....

I was born in Marin County, C.I., but have never felt at home there. We still have relatives in Mendocino and also some in L.A. I do love a lot of things about California, though, especially San Diego, the Sequoias, the Redwoods, and the beach!

New England looks most like home (being Central EUrope). Everything else is just psychologically too far. But going a few pages back - I have been in Bronx recently and was very pleased to see how much is being done, small businesses being reestablished, vacant buildings reoccupied, lots of community development projects, etc. Not so scary anymore, parts of it quite pretty, in fact. What WAS sad, were the projects in Baltimore. They looked poorer that some Roma (Gypsy) settlements I have been to in Eastern EUrope, and that is a lot to say. Must say I will avoid Baltimore for that reason if I can help it, the disparities are just too depressing. I absolutely love Vermont, Maine, and upper New York.

This is a webcam link to a camera on Eagle Harbor, Lake Superior, as far north in Michigan's upper peninsula as you can get. This photo will update quite often so you can watch the seasons change:

This is a picture of the camera taking the picture. This one won't update.

Piffka, Marin County is nice, but for some unknown reason it has a very high incidence of cancer. However, when one looks at the totality of California and what it offers, resident or visitor, it just can't be beat. Redwood trees, Death Valley, the Sierra Nevada range, the ocean, San Francisco, the wine countries all across the state, Lake Tahoe, Big Sur, Carmel, Disneyland, San Diego, Hollywood, Yosemite, the Golden Gate Bridge, Silicon Valley (where the high tech industry was born), and our diverse population. *** Thanks for sharing those photos; they're beautiful! c.i.

I did not got into this thread before because I thought I did not have a favorite state to visit.

But after another wonderful vacation in Florida I'll have to say - Florida it is! I am more relaxed there, I love the wildlife, the flowers, the ocean. I think this is because it comes pretty close to my childhood dreams of a place with palmtrees, sun and sea. And also very important - the food is good! :-)
