Sentence: "And amicus curaie Salve, a/the know baiter of him..."

My question: Which article would be correct to use in the sentence, a or the?

Regards and thanks

@Razer,
Is that 'know' or 'known'? I would say 'a' without understanding Latin.

@Razer,
What does the Latin mean? The use of 'the' and 'a' are usually difficult but 'a' and 'the' can used differently to be effective to give it that extra emphasis e.g.
1) Shakespeare is not a common name but 'THE' Shakespeare is world renowned.
2) Financial crises are not common but 'A' Bush fire can start it.

@Razer,
A/An= for general idea.
The= for specific idea
eg. I want to eat an apple (You can't see the specific apple, it's an idea)
I want to eat the apple (Probably, you can see the apple on the table. That's why, you want to eat it)

@Razer,
I didn't give a good example of 'a'.

For hyperbole it can be very useful. To create a truly great financial crisis 'a' George Bush would be the answer. How it works is that 'a' signifies the ordinary but George Bush is not thus it amplifies it more.

'The' implies uniqueness, one and only one.
'A' implies indefiniteness, at least one and perhaps many.
