Need Help With a Newborn Kitten

Reply Fri 6 Aug, 2010 07:12 pm
Yesterday, my cat Mimi, gave birth to one kitten. She gave birth early. I think the storm we had yesterday brought her labor on. The kitten seems to be okay. It seems to be completely formed and has all its hair. I am concerned because it is so very tiny. I am giving it some replacement milk along with the momma feeding it because it is so tiny.

I am not all that good with nursing baby kittens and I want to do whatever I can to help this one. So, how much milk do I give it and how often? Should I be giving it the replacement milk at all? I keep it covered because it gets so cold and that worries me too.

Any and all help and/or advice will be greatly appreciated. I've never had a premature baby kitten before and I'm not sure if it needs anything special or not. I haven't talked to my vet but will be giving him a call.

@Arella Mae,

depends how early and what MaMaKitty can do to feed...

seems to be lots of advice, some differing - I'd give the vet a call to be on the safe side to get some one-to-one advice.

Perhaps Pdawg will be along and can be a little more helpful than the above.

Good luck - would love to see pics if all works out OK Very Happy

@Izzie,
Here is a pic of the kitten. Sorry, it's not a good one. Hard for me to hold the camera and the kitten at the same time. I'll get hubby to take a better pic for me. Thanx for the links. I'm reading them now.

Oh, my, what a tiny one. But, he looks healthy. I would give it and mom a slightly warm heating pad. Doesn't mom have enough milk? I only gave my kittens milk when newborns if the litter was large. I gave them supplement when they were being weaned. One kitten? Never heard of that but, I guess, why shouldn't it happen? Good luck with this one.

@Pemerson,
The mom has plenty of milk. But I'm not so sure the baby is able to suck enough. Yeah, tiny as can be. Thank you pemerson.

@Arella Mae,
He is a Golden Beauty.
See what the veterinarian thinks (the good one).

Do mother n kitten have a good, soft, warm nest ?
What is his name ?

How is he doing ?

@Arella Mae,
Oh Arella - such a tiny wee kittie - how did you manage through the night? Did you get to speak to a vet yet. I think the most important thing is keeping the littlun warm and snuggled - do you have a pipette you can use to give warm water / supplement if he/she cannot suck yet?

Hoping to hear that you're managing to get something down.

ahh, give him/her a little stroke from me and a big stroke to the MaMa kitty. Very Happy

@Izzie,
The kitten made it through the night but he is not able to suck on his momma. He's just too little. His mom is not showing much interest in him. She did clean him up this morning and then has stayed away. I am feeding him/her replacement milk with a bottle but he's not taking to it like he should. The vet is out and about today so he's going to stop by and check on him. I'm keeping him warm and fed, which is all I know to do right now. I thank all of you so much for your advice and encouragement. Please keep the wee one in your prayers. I hate losing any animal!

Here is a picture of my little one from just a few minutes ago. I just got done feeding him. He seems like he is trying to suck so I guess that is good. I have him on a heating pad and am praying he/she is going to make it.

Miss Lizzie, I'm afraid to name the baby yet. I get so attached to my animals as it is. I have never had good luck with kittens that need to nurse and have no mother.

@Arella Mae,
animals tend to know that their babies will not make it way before we do.

Thats probably why the mom didnt give it much attention.

Im sorry Sad

Relax; he is still alive, in perfect health. He only molted.

Oh, I thought surely he would make it. I know how you feel, I feel really sad too. When we took this kitty home (my avatar) Nixie, she was 5 weeks and starved. I had to force-feed her for awhile, which is rather disturbing. So much work, I finally slept with her in the guest room. My favorite of all and any pets I've had. But, I think that way about whatever pets I have at any given time. You tried.
