@plainoldme,
Unaccompanied women can get a hard time even in some innocuous places. I remember, decades ago, I was in NYC and had a couple of hours to kill before meeting someone. I bought a newspaper and went over to a nearby large hotel and sat down in the lobby to read. After about a half hour, a man from the hotel staff came over and said, "Madam, we do not allow unaccompanied women to remain in our lobby. You will have to leave", When I asked why, he said, "That is our policy" and walked away. I decided to sit there a while longer because I couldn't think of where else to park myself at that moment. Sure enough, ten minutes later, the man comes back, informs me I'm on private property and must leave. Then it dawns on me, "Oh Lord, he thinks I'm a hooker". At that point, I did leave. I really felt ticked off about that because there were men sitting around that lobby.
I don't know whether something similar would happen today because that was some time ago.
