What do you look at while driving?

Earlier today I was coming back from lunch and I was driving back to work when I noticed that I was looking more at the scenery than I was at the road. It got me thinking that I was able to concentrate on the road while looking at the scenery. Weird, huh? Has this happened to anybody here?

I'm too busy texting and drinking tequila when driving to notice any trees.

@edgarblythe,
Yeah, I tend to do that from time to time! But I mean, have you ever experienced that you're driving without paying attention to the road?

@powers3000,
Lots of times, and boy am I glad it hasn't affected my driving record or insurance rates. So far, things that need attention, changes in traffic flow for example, seem to get it. This happens in my hometown and on highways. I'm very attentive to traffic away from home.

@roger,
I have to agree with you, I'm also very attentive when I see accidents on the freeway or at any place.

@roger,
i love that feeling you get when you arrive at a place you routinely drive to (like work) and you can't really remember the trip

when i travel i rake the road less travelled, i don't care much about making time, i'd rather drive emptier roads (as opposed to freeways) and enjoy the scenery

@dirrtydozen22,
I am glad you do concentrate on the road! Some people tend to look at other things while driving.

I have always had funny eyes and have made it through fifty years of driving with an excellent record, knock on wood. I do that probably by looking around more intensely than other drivers might. I have, though, memories of sort of zoning out on long stretches with virtually no traffic - but I'll catch myself. I do think it is a kind of double behavior going on in that kind of zoning out for a second, that you are still watching while you are thinking. As to looking from side to side, that can be important, it's good to have a sense of your car relative to the space around it. I've described driving through some northern california landscape before on a2k as being like a low flying bird above a winding river ... or something like that, a beautiful feeling, expecially if accompanied by great music.

@ossobuco,
Sounds nice, driving through Northern CA. In my area, between Georgetown and Austin, traffic is trecherous, so I look at the signs in relation to the lanes, the exits, the ramps, all the road building, my hand written directions. Nasty driving here.

So, husband drives mostly and I look at the beautiful oak trees, the Crepe Myrtles.

@powers3000,
Definitely happens to me. I am very visual. I also look for hawks in trees on the side of the road.

We have so many people on the road who don't have a license,
or others who are used to driving on the left hand side of the road in their
country, and perpetually occupy the left lane while again others lose valuable items from their pick-up trucks, it wouldn't be a wise idea to sightsee while
driving on our freeways in southern California.

@CalamityJane,
Oh! Glad they're from England, or something. I was afraid they were dozing, unless from around here, in which case, they are just drunk.

@roger,
No they're actually from Asian countries who drive left.
Oh, I forgot the DUI candidates and believe me, we have plenty of them around too.
