i'm all guessed out. i've even searched through the oscar winners on IMDB for a film fitting the bill, to no avail.
That's because I have to humbly apologize -- I was working on memory and should have confirmed that the film won the Jury Prize at Cannes and was one of the most notable films Oscar overlooked.

The picture is pretty fuzzy.... How about "
Slaughterhouse Five"?
No, it's black-and-white. If you check all the clues, it's Italian realist.
"La Notte di San Lorenzo"
Correct. English title: "The Night of the Shooting Stars." Whew.
Your turn!
excuse the size
. it is the right way up.
nope. the kids in the frame aren't the central characters so don't let them confuse you. only one of them is a (sort-of) recognisable actor.
negative. as we're at the 3 guess mark allow me to drop the first clue: the majority of the movie takes place in a school. the movie takes its name from the fictional school.
"Fast Times at Ridgemont High"
nope, on both counts. its a fair bit newer than both of those. 2nd clue: arguably it is this film (and in general the work with the director) that is the source of the recent renaissance of mr. bill murray.
"Rushmore", indeed. gj joefromchicago

"Intolerance" it is. Over to you...
