I sort of like Bill Clinton, although I voted against him second time he ran. I don't spend much time thinking about Ted Turner. I suppose he's decent enough. Now, this Matthews guy, there's one I distrust to the core.

The man has been a first class jerk for years. Naturally, my first thought was, "This guy is apparently guilty of the very thing he accuses others of." Of course I was happy to see such a guy shut down by his own failings. Gloating I am not. Not when it involves harm to a child.

I suppose it reveals my petty nature, but I can't seem to ignore your repeated attempts to say one thing, and then explain it as something else.

Here is your original post:

"After years on KSEV, a Tomball/Houston radio station, castigating liberals on their morals, conservative talk show host John Matthews has resigned. Cause: He was indicted on a charge of exposing himself and seeking sexual gratification before a girl younger than seventeen. He has vowed to fight the charge. It is but one more example that it makes no difference the political orientation; people will be imperfect. While it gives me a great deal of personal satisfaction to see this particular person fall, I do not ascribe his alleged behavior to his spouting off like Rush Limbaugh all the time. "
If there is a sentiment for the plight of the girl in the above, I'm afraid I missed it.

You took some care to indicate that you did not make a direct connection between this miscreant's behavior and his politics, but you made no secret of your gloating.

Your 5th post read as follows:

"It may have looked like I was gloating in earlier posts. I would prefer that he be back on the radio telling folks how low people like me are than to have him or anyone be guilty of such a crime. Anyway, justice will be served."

Your 9th post was "Eventually getting to the girl is your interpretation. The negative is ascribed automatically in the minds of antagonists."

If you insist on claiming you considered the poor girl's situation from the start, so be it.

You might come across more credible, though, if you acknowledged that your first reaction was to gloat. There's nothing all that wrong with gloating, particularly if you eventually recognized that a real human being was involved in the circumstances, but your insistence otherwise rings quite false.

A minor issue in the larger scheme of things.

The reason I did not mention the girl at first, I did not know anything about her, or if the man were truly guilty. Once I knew for sure, you will note I expressed concern.

Talk show host formally sentenced for indecency
By ERIC HANSON
Copyright 2004 Houston Chronicle

Former talk show host Jon Matthews was sentenced today to seven years deferred adjudication, part of a plea agreement reached in June on charges he exposed himself to an 11-year-old girl.

Matthews, who hosted a conservative talk show on KSEV-AM, pleaded guilty to one count of indecency with a child in June. Today's hearing formalized that plea.

Today's hearing, in the court of state District Judge Brady Elliott, was attended by both Matthews and family members of the victim.

Defendants who successfully complete the terms of deferred adjudication, a form of probation, avoid final conviction, but the charge remains a part of their record.

His sentence calls for him to register as a sex offender during the term of the deferred adjudication and for 10 years afterward. He must perform 160 hours of community service and move from his Sugar Land house.

Prosecutors said Matthews can no longer reside at the house on Rolling Mill because it is too close to Sugar Land Middle School. State law prohibits sex offenders from living within 1,000 feet of a school.

Matthews must also make a $5,000 donation to Crime Stoppers, undergo sex offender counseling and write a letter of apology to the victim.

According to court documents, the victim - a neighbor of Matthews - went to Matthews' home on Oct. 9 to play with his new puppy and he answered the door in his underwear. The girl told investigators that, at one point, Matthews put on shorts, but later pulled down the shorts and underwear and said "whoops."

Matthews had been a fixture on Houston's radio scene for more than 20 years. He resigned from KSEV after he was indicted in November.

Pedophilia, criminality, and piss poor manners are equal opportunity offenses. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, politics, national origin, gender or sexual orientation.

You are right, phoenix. The only reason Matthews is getting this attention is because he spent many years on the airwaves denigrating the morals of "liberals" as if we are solely responsible for societal ills. If he had not aimed his vitriol so specifically, he would have just been another pervert to me.

edgarblythe- Are you familiar with the term, "reaction formation"?

Link to "reaction formation"

Haven't you noticed that many pedophiles have been persons who chose a calling in the church where the individuals were supposed to exhibit the highest standard of morality? I don't think that it is a coincidence!

Sure; I know many people in my personal meanderings in that category. That's no reason to let him off the hook.

RICHMOND -- Former radio talk show host Jon Matthews surrendered at the Fort Bend County jail today after an arrest warrant was issued for him for allegedly violating probation.

Matthews received a seven-year deferred adjudication sentence two years ago when he pleaded guilty to a charge of indecency with a child.

According to court records, Matthews, 61, tested positive for alcohol, and was discussing sexual fantasies over the Internet.

Matthews was placed on probation after he admitted exposing himself to an 11-year-old girl in October 2003 in his Sugar Land home.

Among the conditions of the probation were that Matthews abstain from alcohol use and refrain from viewing sexually obscene material.

The order for Matthew's arrest was signed July 28 by state District Judge Brady Elliott.

Matthews was released about 2 p.m. today on $20,000 bond.

In the 2003 incident, police said the girl -- who was a neighbor -- arrived at the Matthews house to play with Matthews' puppy.

Matthews answered the door in his underwear and the girl told investigators Matthews sat on the floor and that his genitals were exposed.

Court documents state Matthews then left the room to put on a pair of shorts.

"Upon his return to the living room, the Defendant pulled his shorts and underwear down and exposed his genitals to Sara Post (pseudonym), then he said 'whoops.' Sara Post demonstrated how far down the Defendant pulled his shorts and underwear. The Defendant told Sara Post not to tell what he had done."

After he was sentenced, Matthews attorney, Stephen Doggett, read a statement from his client.

"To the complainant and her parents, I again apologize," he said.

Matthews, who often took a hard law-and-order stance on his radio show, took some potshots and the American judicial system outside the courthouse after he was sentenced.

"Those of you who have listened to my radio show and read my newspaper columns over the years know how strong a supporter I was of our criminal justice system. I can only say how misguided I was. Our criminal justice system is not based on justice, it is a quota system where conviction is the only scorecard," he said.

As near as I can figure, he still admits guilt, but wants to claim he is somehow being railroaded. Maybe there will be a follow up in the next few days.

I found this in a 2004 article.

"I'm really not able to say anything right now," Matthews said. "At some point in the future, there will be an opportunity."

Matthews resigned from KSEV AM shortly after the indictment.

Police records show there is evidence of another case against Matthews involving sexual offense of a child that was not prosecuted.

Another neighbor, now an adult, told Sugar Land police that Matthews fondled and exposed himself to her in 1986, when she was 12 years old, News2Houston reported.

The girl's mother reported it to Sugar Land police. She said police did not feel there was enough evidence to pursue it, so Matthews was not charged.
