@snood,
He has to have the mind to compose it.

It was a compliment. It means "He sure can write."

That was an excellent find, EB, and du Bois' last lines say it all very succinctly:

Quote:
. . . it is ridiculous to seek to excuse Robert Lee as the most formidable agency this nation ever raised to make 4 million human beings goods instead of men. Either he knew what slavery meant when he helped maim and murder thousands in its defense, or he did not. If he did not he was a fool. If he did, Robert Lee was a traitor and a rebel–not indeed to his country, but to humanity and humanity’s God.

@Setanta,
I was going to put it on your new thread, but I couldn't find it.

@snood,
I know. Many don't have the same knowledge or ability to compose anything close.

@edgarblythe,
It's fine the way it is, EB. I started that thread because it seemed this thread was being ignored, and specifically, that people were going to babble on, overlooking the slavery issue as though those men were great Americans who were being slighted because they were on the losing side in a trivial cousins conflict. It seems this thread has been more or less resurrected, so the purpose is served.

Once again, that du Bois quote is a great find, Boss.

DuBoise gets overlooked far too often, these days.

@cameronleon,
Not all Nazis or the KKK are bad dudes. They just kill innocent people.

@cameronleon,
Some kind of reverse ad hominem argument.

Ad hominem usually goes, awful people follow this movement so the movement must be awful.

This argument goes, some good people were there so the Confederacy wasn't all bad.

Sorry, it's still an ad hominem argument. Your argument is bad, and you should feel bad.
