Should it be 'is' or 'are'?

The realism of Zola's scenarios in his novels is/are reflected in the streets the narrator saw.

My teacher used 'are'. Why is it so? I thought the subject should be 'realism' and 'is' is the verb that should be used.

Many thanks.
