Is 'the year of' needed?

We will be commemorating in 2015, the year of the 750th anniversary of the birth of our First High Priest.

Is the part in bold needed? I guess it isn't. However, could some member/s confirm whether I am correct? Furthermore, are there any errors in the sentence?

Thanks in advance.

or

We will be commemorating the 750th anniversary of the birth of our First High Priest in the year 2015.

Sounds much better, but that's just me...

@tanguatlay,
Interesting. The original is correct, but Barbie is right. "The year of . . ." is not needed. Still, it seems to designate the entire year as having a special significance. I would be inclined to leave it in, but if you don't like it, take it out and no harm will be done.
