@panzade,
I also didn't have to deal with that. My father would have been ok with it, as I suspect he was an agnostic in retrospect, but he had been hospitalized a lot off and on in the year or three where I was transitioning from being religious. My mother - extremely religious - was starting into alzheimer's, and ordinary conversation was trouble enough then. This all had no part in my changing, as I was starting to separate from religion some time before all that, but it precluded any giant family argument at the time.

@panzade,
I have always been impressed by the standards of Ethical Culture. Ethical behavior motivated by reason. I found similarities in Unitarianism, the main difference, IMO, being deism.

I thought Unitarians were atheists, but it's just that they don't like to talk about that.

@Setanta,
My experience was that they rejected some Christian doctrines but believed in God

I recently joined a local Unitarian society. The way we like to put it is that "we believe in one god, tops." As an organization, Unitarian Universalists have not committed to any particular number of gods in the universe, if any. They are committed to secular principles such as world peace, respect for fellow humans, and similar do-gooder stuff. And they point out that these principles are to be taken as guidelines rather than dogma. Check for yourself if you're interested. To my taste, the "sources of our living tradition" have too much vagueness and new-age mumbo-jumbo in them, but the "seven principles" are quite alright.

They might just as well be if they want to pick and choose. I presume they go to comfort each other.

Unitarianism is a mixed bag of all religions (talk about hedging their bets!), they've even got Jesus in there somewhere, but they water him down by tossing other religions into the mix.
It's like buying a boxed set of Elvis records and finding he's been watered down by having a bunch of lesser artists in there with him, you'd be justifiably annoyed because Elvis alone was KING, just as Jesus was KING, and you don't want him lumped in with other stuff..Smile
Right Elv?

"Uh-huh"..

Incidentally there are Unitarian churches around and I often wonder if they pray like this- "Our Father in heaven and anybody else out there, hallowed be thy names..."

WIKI- Unitarian adherents generally accept religious pluralism and find value in all teachings

There are Unitarians with a capital letter, meaning Unitarian Universalist church and its members; and unitarians (without a capital) which are those that consider themselves Christians that do not believe in the trinity.

The first are mostly Atheist; the other are biblical unitarians and believers in God and the Son of God.

Why should he?! Why should he need to prove his belief to you?' Do you fathom yourself the ultimate authority? Does anyone have an alternate choice besides yours?

@tenderfoot,
First of all, no one was dropping copies of the Koran on his desk, and continued to do that even when asked to stop. Some assholish version of christian dick was harassing him, and Edgar did the right thing. I applaud his actions. The lower case used to spell christian was intentional. His tormentor was not a real believer, he used the cover of a believer to bully someone.
