@Setanta,
Ok, I laughed but then I stopped. I once hired extra staff to help me complete "Project From Hell I" which, unfortunately, was followed by "II", but that's not the story. One of my key new hires was an Orthodox Jew who had to be off the roads in time for Friday Sabbath which begins at sunset on Friday.

The project began in April. We were working late hours by August and then pushing to close it out by the end of December. OOOPS! Sunset in Chicago in December is at 4:16pm. My client was based in CA which meant that it was noontime Friday when my key employee was shutting down for the week here. There were numerous occasions when I said, "We'll have to wait until Monday for that. The Sabbath has begun here."

I actually heard one person grumble... "how do I become an orthodox Jew?"

When i was in the army, there was always a problem with staffing for christian holidays. I always knew who the Jews were in any unit to which i was assigned, because we were the ones who worked on Christmas and Easter. It was a good deal, too, because they would give us two days off for every one we worked.

@Setanta,
Is there a way to have Socialism registered as a religion? It would be fun to tell my employer "my 40 weekly hours are over. Gotta stop working now, Have a nice weekend!" It makes as much or as little sense as the Third Commandment.

@Thomas,
Jesus didn't think it was fun!

@reasoning logic,
I agree. Jesus was really serious about being a Socialist. Country-club Republicans in America would be much less enthusiastic about him if the had actually read all the nasty things Jesus said about rich people.

THAT is exactly what the sabbath was all about . You were not allowed to work people into an early grave .

I wonder if the slave's master found it more profitable this way?

Could this have extended the service of the slave?

Could this have allowed the master to build up more human property for himself as the slave would have a day off and may have enough energy for sex and as we know the children would be the masters property.

Talk about reaping where one has not sown! But then again I guess that even the master did the sowing at times!

@reasoning logic,
There were no slaves in nomadic herding society at the time . Slaves were in the big cities of this era . The law was to prevent the ambitious from over working themselves into an early grave . Something we need now more than ever .

@reasoning logic,

Slavery, especially hereditary slavery, is more common in this type of society than in others.
That statement is wrong if applied to the Middle East about 2,000 BCE . They may have taken slaves to sell at city markets, but they had no need for them . Farmers had a great need for slaves, as did tradesmen but herders of this region at this time did not need slaves .

The Sabbath also came about because they needed a day to rest their stomachs and to cleanse them . Lying around drinking water one day a week is good for meat eaters . Not exercising is essential if you are not eating .

@Ionus,
Could it be that the most profitable herd was sheep?

Religion is characterized by a God(s) seen as taking active role in human affairs. Christianity, Islam and Judaism are examples of religions developing in Pastoral societies. Note that God in these religion is often likened to a shepherd and humans to domesticated animals (e.g., sheep). Note also the heavy male bias of early versions of these religions.

@reasoning logic,
The early dominance of males in all religions shows that they are fiction and mythological rather than real.

(perhaps you meant to say fictional?)
If I can prove an early male dominance in sailing does that show it as more fictional and mythological than real ? How about the early dominance of women in the first cities, will that show the first cities are fictional and mythological rather than real ?
