Yeah, that's a good paper. But, it will not dissuade the faithful from wanting to police atheism.

@edgarblythe,
Heh. If I only posted things that would dissuade the atheist police this would be a very short thread Smile

I'm just interested in how other people arrive at atheism, you know, if there isn't an atheist seminary or madrasah in the neighbourhood. And seeing Ricky Gervais playing it relatively straight was interesting too. Lot of comments on the piece too.

@hingehead,
He made many of the points I like to make. -
I never knew what my parents thought. They never told me and in fact never really spoke of religion. My step father once said, after I knew him for over 9 years, "One of these days we are going to get in the car and go to church." But he gave me a withering stare one time, when I called a church member 'brother so-and-so.' "You'll never see the day I call one of them 'brother,'" he said. My Mom did buy us a set of books that told all the Bible stories in about fifth grade English. I guess they held some sort of belief. My real father died in 1948, three years after the last time I saw him, so I don't even remember him.

@edgarblythe,
Both my folks were lapsed christians, not sure if there was reason past pragmatism - they both worked hard and may have valued weekends more than church, but I suspect it was more than that - we never even did xmas or easter. I didn't ever sense any hostility toward the church, but likewise it never came up in conversation, although they did stop talking to some friends who were mormons or latter day saints or JWs (I can't keep track) when they started trying to get my parent to join the church. But they didn't speak ill of them to us kids. We just stopped seeing them.

It sounds like your step father suffered some abuse at the hands of a brother, or am I reading to much into that?

@hingehead,
I don't know what to make of my step father in that regard. There was no Catholicism in our family, however.

@littlek,
God first

thanks littlek

it can go both ways

otherwise Christians or any group that thinks they are right persecuted Atheism and Atheism persecuted Christian

this is vain and foolish

Christians should love the Atheism and the Atheism should love the Christian

we are both flesh and blood kind

we both love

we both are born

we both die

why not join each other in love

we do have to think them

who can prove a thing? not a Christian and not a Atheism

no one can prove a thing but in their heart

so what the Atheism believes different than me

so what the Christian believes different than the Atheism person

with love and a holy kiss Roy

@year2027,
I have not the slightest interest in what i'm sure is a self-serving account of your life--i'll never know, though, because i'm not going to bother to click on your link. It ain't just your spelling that sucks, Bubba, you have a serious problem with coherence. If you try to kiss me, i'm gonna knock ya into the middle of next week . . . creep.
