What to do?

Hey Beth, remember I was ill with flu last year... the horse pills I had to take killed all the bacteria in my tummy - so, I was given some "probiotic and prebiotic with multivitamins and minerals well being - food supplement" capsules. I looked for a picture of the container but I can't find it online.

I don't know if anyone else has tried them and I'm sure some will say not to take them - but, I think they helped. I had to have 2 lots of antibiotics for my sinuses and my tummy was a mess Sad

lotsa steam inhalations and Tulip recommened 2 drops of THYME oil in hot water.

hope you feel better soon girl. x

@Izzie,
Oh Izzie, great idea. I can ask the pharmacist for prebiotic/probiotic capsules. The thyme oil - is that for inhaling or drinking? if for drinking, 2 drops in how much hot water. I know I can get that at one of the herbalists on the Danforth.

Thank you for picking up the brain strands!

@ehBeth,
oh, steam inhalations...

also, tea tree oil ... only a couple of drops tho in hot water - inhale every hour or so

the probiotic capsules seemed to work for me - I was on doxycycline antibiotics (horse pills is right) - killed everything in my tummy - nasty nasty.

Please do stay home Bethie... no driving for a couple days a? until you're back in balance

all love and healing wishes to you three...

@ehBeth,
You can get those pills with SQUILLIONS of good bacteria WITHOUT dairy!

I just bought a bottle WITH last night, because I am on strong antibiotics, so I know what there is.

Tea Tree oil is, indeed, great in steam as it has antibiotic properties. Just be careful...it kind of hits you with a hell of a blast!

Of course I wish only the very best for both you and yours! I wish I could be of more help but long distance precludes coming over with soup and snacks and such.

I've used Tea Tree Oil for years, but I cannot with any certainty say it's been of net benefit, however it's not likely to do any harm in the short-term with judicious use, so what the hell.

I fear the only reliable remedy is waiting. However, I hope that by now you two are OK and enjoying yourselves.

One time when I still had my farm broke my toe. went to the doc and he told me "just live with it cause nothing can be done other than just time but if the pain and discomfort bother you, get a hammer and bash your thumb, you will forget about the toe." well, I never bashed thumb but just going on my experience what you could do is have hip replacement surgery, that will give you more than enough pain for at least a year to make you totally forget about any flu bug. LSD isn't a bad idea either.

Just saw this - all of you get better fast fast fast. Glad you're thinking about probiotics, etc., Beth.

@ossobuco,
Does a probiotic get your body flora all well and back in shape after taking doses of stuff like CIPRO ?

@farmerman,
I would ask the pharmacist. I was also interested in Swimpy's suggestion of taking acidophilus, which if I remember, is the bacteria without the dairy product; again, asking the pharmacist.

@ossobuco,
When I was on a healthy dose of antibiotics for a case of cellulitis, the dr. also subscribed acidophilus suplements to keep the gut bugs populated. Antibiotics kill them off.

@hamburgboy,
Plain yogurt worked when one of the cats was on long term antibiotics.

Anyhow, you two make yourselves as comfortable as possible till it passes.

@msolga,
Just got off the phone with hamburgboy. Sounds like his appetite has returned and that he's had a couple of good meals. Set is still on a light-duty menu for another day or so.

The antibiotics seem to be helping. The pain that had spread around my head from the ear infection has really really been reduced. Still a fair bit of wooziness and dizziness - park your car if you see me heading out - but I'm feeling cautiously optimistic. Tired but optimistic.

Thanks everyone. I'll go out to a pharmacy tomorrow to get some of the good stuff for protecting my gut from the antibiotics stripping it out.
