I agree that acupuncture (and believe that massage) is safer than chiro.

Dys didn't ask about massage, he asked about acupuncture. I hope he isn't getting frustrated by our digressions...

I have a good friend who is a chiropractor who specializes in acupuncture. He's offered to treat my back pain several times, but I haven't taken him up on it. I have scoliosis, so everything's in a different location than normal, including nerves. That makes me nervous when it comes to trusting someone with needles. If my physiology were normal, though, I'd try it in a heartbeat. I think it's smart to try alternatives before resorting to pain meds.

(Gentle hugs to Diane. Hope the acupuncture works and your back feels better very soon!)

Ulla got acupuncture re her back a couple of times over the last years (paid by our mandatory health insurance). Better than injections.

Best wishes for Diane!

@dyslexia,
As this thread indicates, some people have gotten major good results.
Give it a try; it seems to be safe.
I heard that acupuncture originated in ancient China, when a Chinaman
in some dungeon was being tortured against his will with needles.
His tormentor discovered inadvertently that the needles
ended pre-existing pain.

If u 'll excuse me for stating the obvious,
hanging around in a hot tub can be helpful in relaxing muscular spasms.

Presumably, x-rays have been taken
to ascertain whether there is any impingement of bone on a nerve ?

anyone with any experiences to share?

No experience of my own, I admit. But I remember a good experience Lady Di had last year, when we attended the Church of Beethoven together. There was a masseur at the service who kneaded the lady for 10 minutes or so. At the time she was very impressed with what he did for her back. Does she still have his card?

My grandma swore that acupuncture was the ONLY thing that helped with her arthritis.

The owner of the place where I work is an acupuncturist, but he practices in California, so, there are no witnesses.

Oh! I had no idea he does acupuncture too. Well, if she finds she'd rather have another massage from him, I'm sure she'll ask him for one.

@Thomas,
She got both acupuncture and a massage, says it felt wonderful. by the time she got home she says her back hurts just the same. No harm/ no cure. She just took 2 excedrin extra strength and went to bed.

@dyslexia,
Poor Diane. I'd give her a hug, but it would give her back even more excruciating pain.

My understanding is that acupuncture is backed by clinical research showing effectiveness for treating back pain. I don't believe chiropractors can say that.

I am far more dubious about chiropractors than acupuncture.

Bummer.

(She sees the doctor again soon, no?)

I agree with David re wondering if something is impinging on a nerve.

Also it just occurred to me, and must have occurred to the people treating her - is it possibly bursitis? I've never had it, but I remember my father having it.

Has she tried a good stretching regimen like yoga?
