@glitterbag,
I moved from Annapolis in May 1979. I lived right outside of town on the Dividing Creek in Arnold.
Middleton's was a favorite hangout especially on St Patricks Day.

@panzade,
We lived in Arnold, Tanglewood in 79 and I know exactly where Dividing Creek road is located. We moved to Annapolis in 85. I don't know if you've had a chance to visit recently, but bring Xanax, you would not believe how crowded and overdeveloped this area has become. The old shopping center in Parole was torn down so they could build high-rises and have attempted to make a micro city there. Of course you have all the usual chain restaurants, plus an attempt at building luxury apartments, pool on roof, pool somewhere else inside the building, way over priced. When we lost our Springer Spaniel we tried staying out of the house. It's funny how lonely a house can become when a beloved dog dies. On one of our extended shopping for nothing trips my husband drove over to the apartment model, he had me worried, I thought he was actually interested. The largest unit was about 2000 sq ft and was priced at a million smackers. I remember the real estate agent pointing out the gourmet kitchen with Kenmore Elite appliances. I already own a few Kenmore appliances, but if I'm moving into a million dollar small apartment with a lousy view, I want to see a Viking stove.

Sadly for the investors this all happened when the bubble burst, so they never managed to sell anything anywhere close to a million, prices dropped between 6 to 7 hundred dollars less but the association fees would still run about 2 grand a month. Somebody seriously overestimated the value of a condo in a parcel of land in a less than gleaming part of the Annapolis area.

We have had galloping development. Sighhhhhh

Sampled my first cold weather pint last night. So good, I followed it up with another.
Perfect dark beer for drinking in front of a log fire in a loud, busy pub.

Just love their advertising slogan....

"What's the matter Lagerboy? Afraid you might taste something?"

Broke my one and only pint glass last night; dropped it on the floor.
The beer didn't taste as good in a regular glass.

@glitterbag,
Not as easy as you think.

I'm like a woman shopping for a pair of shoes.

Will it have an emblem.? From a brewery?
Heavy or light?

@panzade,
Glass as opposed to mug. No handles allowed. Glass preferably straight sided, as old as possible with signs of wear to the base.

Sort of....

I brought one back with me from England (appropriated it from a pub) -- somehow it didn't break during my travels. A traditional pint glass with etched crown. But, alas, it is nowhere to be found. Lost it in a move somewhere along the way. Sad

@panzade,
I don't know how to transfer a picture from my iPad to this forum. I took a picture of commemorative Guinness glasses from pubs in 1902. I bought two because I think my great great grandfather or his brother ran the pub these glasses are modeled after. The Guinness label mentions a publican I believe is a family member who never left Ireland but haven't done enough research to be sure. I'll post a picture if I can figure out how, took me forever to find out how to post my pix for my icon.

For once some good news.

Quote:
A record-breaking 197 breweries have opened in the UK in the last 12 months, widening the choice of beers for drinkers in a boost to the embattled pub sector, a new consumer guide has revealed.

In London, which was once one of the world's greatest brewing centres before falling into decline, the number of new breweries has almost doubled in the past year to 42.

According to the Good Beer Guide 2014, published by the real ale group Camra, the number of UK breweries is at a 70-year high – with a total of 1,147. The guide lists breweries across the UK, including the 5,200-plus beers they produce, alongside more than 4,545 real ale pubs.

Along with a traditional pint glass, it's always good to sit in traditional surroundings whilst sampling what's on offer.

THE CAT AND FIDDLE.

This is where I spent a fair few evenings from about the age of 17. In here, I learned how to play cribbage (crib), darts and dominoes.
The table on the left always had at least two old boys playing dominoes in those days, and you were allowed to join in if you bought them a pint.
Every time a local went on holiday, they always bought back a souvenir cat or fiddle with them, which would go up on the wall or on a shelf.
There were hundreds of them.

Nowadays, although the interior is almost identical, it is famed for it's pub grub just as much as the cask ale it sells. Wonderful fish and chips, and one of the best Steak and ale pies I've ever eaten.
Back in the day, we would have been lucky if we could get a bag of peanuts and a dried up sandwich.

Looking forward to drinking some Dogfish My Antonia next Friday at a friend's birthday party at the Sea Witch Tavern in Brooklyn.

My Antonia (named after the Willa Cather read), is a continually-hopped imperial pilsner. This lager for ale lovers is citrusy, sweet and refined.

Bookmarking this beer here so I won't forget to try it ... if I ever find it in NYC:

New Belgium Abbey Ale
New Belgium's Fat Tire Amber Ale hogs all the press for the Colorado-based brewery, but the Abbey is its best tribute to beers from its namesake country. Modeled after the strong, Trappist monk-brewed ales of northern Europe, this dark amber beer mixes smooth caramel malt flavors with the fruity, banana and spice notes created by traditional abbey brewer's yeast. At 7-percent ABV, it's a beer to drink carefully, but it's flavorful enough that you won't mind taking it a little slower.

Our tasters say: "Sweet, reminds me of banana bread." "I could take a long pull of this after a hard run."

Our band played at a Harvest Fest in Jupiter Florida where they were serving what was supposed to be a locally brewed brew; but I'm not so sure.

It was pretty good; don't know if I would look for it in the stores.

Howcome all advertised pictures of beer have nice foamy heads; but if the barkeep pours you one like that, he doesn't get a tip?

@neologist,
I've seen bar tenders pour beer down the drain when there's too much foam in the glass. Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

@cicerone imposter,
My kind of barkeep. Unless it's bottled beer.

Had some of this tonight on tap from Edmonds, Washington.
