@dlowan,
(Sorry to have interrupted your conversation, Deb. I didn't realize, in my posting haste.)

Yes, it was amazing. Though the eastern side of the city copped the worst of the monster hail stones. Lots of stories of broken windows on cars & houses ... flooded cars, etc, etc ...

Oh the excitement of it all! Very Happy

@msolga,
Lol!!!

My weather site claims there s still a 100% chance of 14mms of rain on Sunday.

We have had our hopes dashed so often that I will believe it when I see it...but the raqdar is looking a bit hopeful.

PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEZE!!!

But not so much major hail and mini-tornadoes!

Fingers crossed for Adelaide, Deb.

Minus the jumbo hail stones & the mini-tornadoes!

Good question! Smile

"Moomba" has always been understood to be an aboriginal word meaning "let's get together & have fun".
However, rumour has it that we were taken for a bit of a ride about the real meaning, which apparently has something to do with bums! What exactly about bums, I'm not certain. Smile

It's largely a festival for families & children. You know, a big parade with lots of floats & music on a public holiday, with everyone pouring into the city centre. Art shows, some special events, that sort of thing.

Ah. Have fun. I gather rain dances would be appropriate at this one. (In the States, "bums" usually is kind of older pejorative slang for homeless people, panhandlers, smelly vagrants, rather than buttocks--are you talking about anatomy when you use it? Are the aboriginal peoples snickering?)

@MontereyJack,
I won't actually be there myself. (A bit of a party pooper, I'm afraid. Smile ) But those who do attend usually have a great time. Thanks for your good wishes.

Rain dances are appropriate at any time in my state (Victoria) these days. Anything that brings a bit more of it our way is very much appreciated. We're kinda desperate for rain.

My feet are still dry. But then, I just got out of bed.
Thank you. Smile

wet as a shag here. its been raining constantly since about 6.00 pm yesterday.
Lovely.

hoping this continues for melbourne catchments.
Melbourne's water storages are currently at 34.6 of capacity, with the biggest reservoir, the Thompson, at just 21.3% of capacity.

Still raining, but nothing like what we experienced yesterday.
Seems to be easing off quite a bit now.
Oh well. It was good while it lasted!

@msolga,
I hope that it 'rains itself in' a bit. That the ground gets good and soaked.

Can you just imagine how some of the gardens are going to look! the lawns here always look best after the early autumn rains.

Flood warning as storms set to return
Updated 29 minutes ago/ABC news online

Storm hits suburbs: A street in Melton is filled with hail stones the size of walnuts. (User submitted: Ben)

Victorians have been warned they could experience possible flash flooding with heavy rain and thunderstorms forecast for today.

Wild weather dumped heavy rainfall over much of Victoria overnight, following severe afternoon thunderstorms that led to flash flooding and hail damage across much of Melbourne.

The weather bureau says rainfall is expected to reach 100 millimetres in some areas, with the middle and eastern parts of the state to be most affected.

"Yesterday we had golf- to tennis ball-sized hail and certainly there's a prospect of similar sized hail somewhere in the state today," said Richard Carlyon, the Bureau of Meteorology's senior forecaster.

"Whether it's Melbourne I'm not so sure about ... but if it's not Melbourne, I think there's a very good prospect of large hail being reported somewhere in the state."

The SES is advising people to stay clear of creeks and storm drains.

Senior forecaster Scott Williams says the environment remains unstable and is likely to bring more storms this afternoon.

"There's been locally heavy rain around and [it] will continue in the Melbourne area," he said. ...<cont>

@msolga,
Well, it's still a welcome end to the drought you have been experiencing. Are flows in the Murray River back to normal?

It does, Beth. The problem is that it's been so dry for so long the ground's like concrete. At least a lot of my yard is. Makes it very difficult for the rain to soak in & do good.

Very Happy Pristine, is how mine looks!
Not all dusty & crappy looking like yesterday morning. Clean! Very Happy
(My car, out the front, even looks clean! We're not allowed use the water supply for this purpose for obvious reasons. A city of full dirty cars. Smile )
A thoroughly good wash has done wonders.
Now lets hope the soil is getting it's fix!

@georgeob1,
The drought is not over by a long shot, but thanks for wishing it for us , George! Very Happy
It will take considerably more than this, I'm sorry to say. Something like 10 continuous years of drought here now.

I really doubt that, too. Sigh.

But, it's a start! Yes, it is! Very Happy

And now, as it seems that the slow, gentle rain will continue through most of the day (nearly 1 pm now) , I'm going to curl up with a good book for the afternoon. It'll be lovely, soothing (& very unusual!) , reading away with with the sound of rain in the background. I'm looking forward to this! Smile

@msolga,
well, let's hope that some of the water soaks in and it doesn't just all run off in flooding

that'd be a start!
