There is absolutely no telling what the weather will be like. Summers are usually fabulous here but for the last few years they have not arrived anywhere on time!

With yesterday the exception, it still feels like early spring here right now. The AVERAGE temperature in June and July
is around 80.

Is that the week you're going to be here?

Yes. I 'm leaving NY on June 29th, arriving in Portland International Airport at 11:58PM.
The Mensa Annual Gathering will be in my hotel,
the Hilton Portland and Executive Tower,
921 SW 6th Ave., Portland, Oregon 503-226-1611
It runs from June 30th thru the 4th of July.

This will be my first trip to Portland.
2 of my friends, Marty and Cloty were there
for a Mensa Regional Gathering a few years ago.
Thay invited me to fly there with them.
For some reason, I went to another Regional Gathering
at the same time, with the plan that we 'd meet in Las Vegas.
When we met there, thay were THRILLED by how good the Portland R.G. had been.
I regretted not having joined them; now, I get another chance.

I have yet to look over the Program Schedule.
Where is a good place to meet ?
Maybe a good quality restaurant?

Concerning the time, one of the possibilities
is the daytime of June 30th; I have a lot of flexibility then,
before the Program gets going in earnest.

I 'm sure that there r other possibile choices.

@OmSigDAVID,
I'm sure that can work!

I know several good restaurants but we don't go out much anymore so I'm going to ask around a bit to see what I might be missing since we mostly haunt the little neighborhood joints these days.

What kind of food do you like? There is lots of great regional fish and seafood.

I like French and Italian food, but I LOVE fish and lobster.
The regional fish and seafood sounds very alluring.
The most important aspect of preparing good fish
is NOT to overcook it. It shoud be rare; tender n juicy (not sushi).

So far, the best fish that I 've ever been blessed to have in my mouth
were in St. Paul, Minn., at the 2003 Annual Gathering
above the Radisson Hotel, a glass, rotating restaurant.
There were 4 different species of fish on the menu,
all of which were beyond ineffably good.
Applicable English words have just not been invented.
( I had dinner there several times; good desserts, too.)
It fills me with happiness, just to remember it.

Someone once said that life is a series of special moments, strung together by boredom.

@OmSigDAVID,
Great! Then I think I know where we should meet. I'm going to ask around just in case there is something I don't yet know about but I think you'd like the place I have in mind: very old school (it's been in the same location for 110 years), very Portland, excellent very fresh fish and seafood prepared without a lot of fuss.

Is it e z to get a cab in Portland ?
from a hotel ?
Some cities r better than others qua taxi service.

@OmSigDAVID,
I have no idea about taxis here. We always use the transit system, which is excellent. I would offer to pick you up but we'll probably take the train in.

I imaging getting a cab at the hotel won't be a problem at all.

Thank u, boomer.
If I may ask (confidentially): does Mo own a wallet ?

I imagine that he is happy to be on summer vacation from school now.
When I was a kid in school, the happiest day of the school year was the LAST one.

@OmSigDAVID,
His summer break doesn't start for another week and he is REALLY looking forward to it.

Yes he has a wallet.

No you don't need to bring him anything. He's looking forward to meeting you.

Likewise, very much; just 3 weeks to go.

I only asked because, over the years a few times I 've had occasion
to give a kid his approximate age, for instance: a $5 bill
and then I see him half an hour later, and he is still carrying it in his hand.

@H2O MAN,
Bet this is the first time you've ever had a gun thread hijacked into the 'Community' forum.

Maybe so, but it's all good - no worries Mr. Green

It just so happens that my wife and I will be traveling to Portlandia soon.

Carry on

It will be a nice change from hot, drought stricken Georgia.

Would a Hovercraft be acceptable transportation?
I do have weapons made for extreme maritime use.

Yes. In the 1980s, I took one from Hong Kong to Macau.
Thay had no casinos in Hong Kong, so I went to Macau.
( I won, but I did not have a nice time.)
I expected a soft airborne ride from the Hovercraft,
but it was a rocky trip for an hour and a half; counterintuitive.

I know that whatever u have will be a lot better
than a water pistol.

I think the gun laws here read something like "make sure they deserve shootin' before you pull the trigger".

It does get hot here... for a few days every year, at least. Usually around August. We don't have air conditioning and there are only a few days we've ever wished for it. When my family visits, they freeze.

That's not hot, the water in my pool was 96 F. yesterday.

I have a Glacier pool cooler on the way and it should drop the temp by 15 degrees.

@roger,
Most certainly not!

But Oregon does not have very restrictive gun laws. It's the wild, wild, west.
