We found a gun buried in our backyard today. A 38 Special, wrapped in a plastic bag with a stop sign shaped note warning that it was a gun (which seemed a bit redundant).

Why would someone bury a gun like that?

Oh! A mystery!

The police came out and picked up the gun and asked a lot of questions. They were VERY interested.

Maybe we'll find out what the gun was doing buried in our backyard!

I forgot to ask --

The police gave me a property receipt. I told them the gun wasn't my property and I just wanted it gone. They said they had to give it to me.

Why did they give me a property receipt?

@boomerang,
Probably just as they said. A routine procedure that had to be followed even in cases where it didn't make much sense. Otherwise, there would be an impression the police were going around confiscating private property without justification.

That woud not apply to a DONATION to the police dept.,
which this appears to have been.

What make n model was it, boomer?
Barrel length?
Was ammunition present together with it ?

Did it appear to be functional ?

I didn't take a photo.

It was a 38, loaded, it had a very short barrel. The police report says it was made in Germany.

It was really rusty. The policewoman said that it looked like it had been there for a long time. It was wrapped in a bag from a company that's been out of business for a while.

If the rust was bad enuf, then it was beyond restoration.

U probably did the best thing.
It might have been discharged in a crime; if it was,
then u don't wanna use it for self-defense.

I think that u said that u have another gun for self-defense.

@OmSigDAVID,
Mr. B does have a gun.

According to neighborhood folklore our house has a history of once having some pretty sketchy people living in it. My worry was that perhaps it had been used in a crime -- why else would someone bury a loaded gun?

I think revolvers r safer than automatics; (just a personal preference).
Did Mo express an opinion about the disinterred German revolver ?

The house on the corner had a murder in it,
about maybe 40 years ago. A ruff guy murdered his son.

@OmSigDAVID,
Mo thought it was CRAZY to find a loaded gun buried in the yard.

I think it turned out to be a good lesson in what to do should a person find a gun: assume it's loaded, don't touch it, call the police.

Good advice, but if you find one in someones home don't call the police - call the homeowner.

Nah! They would have tossed it in the trash and hoped it didn't go off when processed at the dump.

@OmSigDAVID,
There is absolutely no telling what the weather will be like. Summers are usually fabulous here but for the last few years they have not arrived anywhere on time!

With yesterday the exception, it still feels like early spring here right now. The AVERAGE temperature in June and July is around 80.

Is that the week you're going to be here?

Yes. I 'm leaving NY on June 29th, arriving in Portland International Airport at 11:58PM.
The Mensa Annual Gathering will be in my hotel,
the Hilton Portland and Executive Tower,
921 SW 6th Ave., Portland, Oregon 503-226-1611
It runs from June 30th thru the 4th of July.

This will be my first trip to Portland.
2 of my friends, Marty and Cloty were there
for a Mensa Regional Gathering a few years ago.
Thay invited me to fly there with them.
For some reason, I went to another Regional Gathering
at the same time, with the plan that we 'd meet in Las Vegas.
When we met there, thay were THRILLED by how good the Portland R.G. had been.
I regretted not having joined them; now, I get another chance.

I have yet to look over the Program Schedule.
Where is a good place to meet ?
Maybe a good quality restaurant?
