I am writting an essay on this topic as part of an assignment at the University of Canterbury. The format of the essay is a "for and against" category. I need to use answers via asking these questions via email.
Cheers
Andre

@Onz,
The question is meaningless unless you specify the objective or standard with respct to which the judgement is to be made.

If, for example your standard is "revenge against the German people for allowing a murderous regime to upset the relative peace of Europe at the time" then you get one set of answers.

If however your standard is "protecting Europe from the coming scourge of Soviet state socialiam" then you might get another, perhaps mixed, set of answers.

If, instead your standard is some rather sappy version of what passes for contemporary political correctitude, then, of course there is no answer at all because the whole damn thing was illegal in that the then nonexistant UN had not authorized it.(Then you could round up Winston Churchill along with Tony Blair.)

There's a thread of what I remember as great length on this topic here on a2k already. I'll see if I can search it out. If I can't, maybe someone else here will remember it.

Ah, that was easy to find - here is the link:

Much too filling. Besides, I rather like the Jordan Cabernet I'm drinking.

@ossobuco,
Thanx for finding that, Osso. Minute I saw the thread I thought, "Hold on a sec. I know we've been here before." But I'm too damned lazy to go looking for old threads. Smile

@Merry Andrew,
You're welcome. In this case it was easy as a plug in at the google custom search window. Such luck does not always happen.

@georgeob1,
But it would have passed. You see, Germany invaded the now nonexistant Soviet Union, which would ultimately have a permanent seat on the not yet created UN Security Council, and . . . .

Hmmm. I'll have what he's drinking.

what can I do to reclaim your acceptance?

No, I am not going to send you chopped liver.

@Onz,
That question also depends on which German cities you are talking about.
If you are talking about Dresden, then no,the bombing was not justified.
There was no military reason for it at all.

If you mean Berlin or any of the cities in the Ruhr Valley, then yes there was military justification for it.
Many of those cities were part of the German industrial complex, and as such destroying them was a military objective.
Berlin, as capitol of Germany, was an important city, and destroying it was a valid military target.
