Why are dogs afraid of thunder and cats not?

@dlowan,
I'm afraid I have a mutant cat, too, Deb.

A really LOUD thunderstorm a few days ago & I'm afraid she was a total scaredy cat. But then, so was I.

(We missed out on the rain. Thanks for wishing it for us. Maybe today?)

@farmerman,

Our dogs and cats are afraid of thunder. I think they inherited it from me. Animals follow the pack leaders. Im terrified of lightning.
If you have a Pilots Licence, you know it is compulsory to be terrified of storms or they wont give you a licence.

Do firecrackers count ? I had a dog and cat as a child who hated each other, but declared a truce every Guyfawks night to hide under my bed. Normally they fought each other like cats and dogs.

@dlowan,
My dog (Dakota) isn't afraid of thunder. But I love thunder storms. Maybe she gets her reactions from me. Maybe some of our pets learn their responses from us?

You're all bloody mutants!!!

The correct order of the universe is:

Dogs + thunder = pathetic cowering mess

Cats + thunder = mild interest.

I am very disappointed that you have amongst you so many not right animals!

As for the humans who are afraid of thunder......

@tsarstepan,
It seems there IS no answer, but Tsar's post tickled my prejudices and made me feel good.

Fireworks and firecrackers most certainly count! LaNeige also was afraid of the 4th of July fireworks they'd shoot off over the Hudson River.

Exactly!

I love thunderstorms. I find them equally as peaceful as a softly snowing night.

Well only when it's really, really close & loud & you can feel the vibrations ... & when also accompanied by ferocious lightning flashes!

What the hell ???? It snows of a night time ? How insipid. Just to clarify for others, snow is the white stuff the rich slide on so they can have drunken orgies all night, right ? We have a lot of thunderstorms here, but snow is about 1200km south.
Oh, and I also have a cat that enjoys thunderstorms, probably more than me due to some nasty experiences when flying. It likes to sit at the window and watch the free show.

@Reyn,
Yeah if there is a loud boom my cats get all scared and run. My dog when I was a kid would run around the house and bark - it seems he thought some one or something was attacking.

@dlowan,
Well, one would have to take notice that felines, when compared to lagomorphs, do come off looking intelligent . . . not that that is much of a compliment . . .

@Setanta,
However, when compared to DOGS, they are Einsteins.

Fun thread! I've lived in FL for some 40 years and have had many, many cats during that time, not ONE of which feared our frequent thunderstorms.

I've only had, let's see, 4 dogs all these years: two were very frightened of storms; the other 2 didn't seem to care.

So, yes, I've seen many more dogs afraid of storms than cats.
