@msolga,
Very neat paintings. I especially like the depiction of what clearly is a coastal groundswell near the "horn". They are standin gwaves that can be 35 or 40 ft high.
Is this artist th newscaster too? Hes good. Walter Cronkite was an accomplished marine artist also.

@farmerman,
Heres a painting from a series of the MEkong Delta by Naval Artist R G Smith , who painted these in 1969. He did a ;lot of night paintings in a grisaille style . The only spots of color would usually be the gunfire from the fast boats

A brief biography of Geoff Hunt is in the new issue of "WOODEN BOAT "magazine. Its pretty good, it gives some understanding of his work methods . It appears that he and several other British marine artists have common work habits, Hunt carries it through model building. .

@farmerman,
So it seems, farmer.

Do post more of their work, please.

This would have to be my favourite so far ...
I love the atmosphere in this painting. :

@farmerman,
Photo of the TAll ship SULTANA, redesigned and totally built as a comunity project by the Town of Chestertown MAryland, (An Eastern Shore community with ties to Chesapeake commerce and deep ocean trade)
The Sultana is a repro of an 18th century vessel that , although beamy and stable, is about as fast as box turtle.

@farmerman,
I came across a painting by John STobart .The subject was a moonlight anchorage of Jooshua Slocum in Tiera del Fuego. The painting is in an issue of Wooden Boat Magazine . The story was that capt Slocum, who refit an old Oyster Sloop, (similar to a pungy) and sailed around the world. He anchored in a small cove in the straits of MAgellan where the YAghan people(whose habit of having small fires in their dugouts gave name Tiera del Fuego to the area along the cusp of the cape). The YAghans were attempting to kill capt SLocum by sneaking up on his parked boat. He was aware of their habits and threw tacks all over his decking and was able to repulse the YAghan warriors.

Stobarts painting isnt so much the boat , but is a neat study of the mountainaous archipelago and the cove in the moonlight.

When I was about 10 years old I discovered the paintings of Tom Lea, a Life magazine artist who painted combat scenes.
My favorites were his marine paintings. His style is somewhat primitive but it exudes quite a lot of passion.

I used to have a book written and illustrated by Tom Lea, The Wonderful Country, 1952 - given to me by my father.

@panzade,
Yep, that is STobarts painting. All the clips I saw were similarly small . In Wooden Boat Mag, they did a larger 3X5 clip and the mountains were magnificent
