Waste of time and energy. Sheet mulch and do raised beds. I'll get back with pictures when time allows...

No need.
As soon as I hit enter?
My brain reset and remembered the black landscaping plastic. Though not hot enough right now, I can start seeds while the plastic is setting for a month.

I got ya Smile

@shewolfnm,
Not plastic - cardboard or newspaper - you can get it at the recycle center of your local garbage dump or ask grocery stores for boxes. Backfill over the cardboard with good soil. The cardboard will just compost into the ground overtime and suppress the weed seeds that exist in the soil. Plant directly into the new soil.

@shewolfnm,
See if your library can get you this book:

http://www.statebystategardening.com/bookstore/images/new%20kitchen%20garden.jpg

Below are some examples for food gardens in small spaces. I like to replace grass with flag stones, pea gravel, creeping thyme or mulch (the cheapest solution). No mow is the goal. While are you at the dump for the cardboard, look around for interesting containers you can use in the garden. I always hunt around for chipped enamelware, soup pots (add holes), old wooden ladders (cheap trellis), etc. I am a strong advocate of "white trash" garden design - it relies heavily on imagination and recycling - not so much on money.

I am loving this color pallet for the living room.

Mostly because I have that ugly rental dark brown carpet? so I need to brighten the walls with something. A soft, almost dirty yellow color would work well..
What is used here is a bit TOO brown, but the colors are nice

@shewolfnm,
I really like the turquoise with it, as in that vase.

@sozobe,
I do too. I could easily find a few throw pillows for that color .
I love the yellow/black/dark brown combination and I may just stick with it.
We have dark wood furniture to begin with.
Flat panel black tv .. so.. the yellow just works..

You can always add a sectional carpet or throw rug over the existing carpet to add more color. Pretend the ugly brown carpet is like a wood floor.

@Green Witch,
Thank the Fates that you are not dealing with seventies shag carpets in avocado or orange flavors.

On the other hand, I quickly tore out the brown carpet here. 1/2 to an inch of sand underneath for quite a space in two rooms. That left me with problematic concrete. Consider the alternatives before you act rashly, she says.

@ossobuco,
Adds, on black plastic, it is famous for destruction of the 'animal' life of the soil by burning. Rocks are pretty good for that too, at least in some areas - talk about heat sinks. I suppose plastic use can differ by region (trying to imagine this, and green witch doesn't use it either), but I don't know any professional who used it in southern california when I was practicing.

Meantime, I live in a black plastic housing tract.. and there are some points of view toward having it with our deep burrowing aggressive plants that fly in.
