@kuvasz,
Kuvie, along with the slow decline in public education over the last 100 years. I saw an article about what they taught in schools 100 yrs ago and what was expected to graduate. Not very many would be able to do that today. We do not put money or emphasis on public schools because...according to Rove..."if we educate them they will vote Democratic." It was in the New Yorker Magazine shortly after Bush was elected. That was just Bush. I think the decline in educational programs and teachers salaries under Republican administrations proves the point. It is not a priority to educate the middle and lower classes. People aren't stupid, they are unaware.
I had a fellow put up a fence for me...in his thirties. Didn't know about Reconstruction or Jim Crow laws. He asked me why black people didn't do anything after Lincoln freed the slaves!!!! I gave him a mini lecture on history since 1865 to the present and he said to me..."But they didn't tell us anything about that in my history class or in my history books in high school!" Yup.
