Yadier (the lesbian) Molina is my favorite catcher now.

got a clutch 2 rbi hit, then had the presence of mind to steal second.

this was important, because the rabbit hitting behind him then tripled.

Yadi woulda got run over if he hadn't started from second base...

@Rockhead,
The only thing I don't like about Yadi is that he seems like a dickwipe.

lee threw 21 pitches for balls the entire night -- talk about efficiency.

@Region Philbis,
I heard talk about Moyer's record on a ESPN ... Moyer has won like 249 games AFTER the age of 30 over his last 18 seasons (not including this year's record). That's an approx. avg. of 14 wins per season for 18 straight years? I got to research that further and see if that's right.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/moyerja01.shtml

Oh, yes! His recent accomplishment of this win (oldest pitcher to have recorded a win) happened after Tommy John surgery in the last year.

His last stellar season was in 2008 at the age of 45 for the Phils where he pitched his typical 200+ innings and got 16 wins. I understand that he does this magic with an 80-82 mph fastball. He just kills most batters with nipping away at the corners and makes them jump at pitches which end up dribbling into grounders. He says that he knows most batters lack the patience or the plate discipline when they get behind in a count. Oh yes, and he has unshaking confidence in his ability while maintaining an even-tempered nature and modesty. It doesn't hurt that he always stays in good atheletic (not baseball) shape, too.

@Ragman,
The Phils are doomed this year. AMazing how a great pitching staff cant do it alone. Ya needs fielding and hitting. Last nights game the Giants shut em out but the San Fran pitchers et off four hits while Lee only let 2 hits(one of which scored)

@farmerman,
Wasn't Chase Utley's injury a devastating blow to them? I'm an AL-er so I don't follow NLers that closely. Is he out indefinitely? Wasn't he their cleanup hitter (4th in the order)? Who is their cleanup now?

Oh! They are without Ryan Howard, too? Their hitting problem is like the inverse of Red Sawx pitching problem. Oh yeah,,,then you take away a veteran 2nd and first baseman away from the fielding. Mercy..that is crippling.

I don't think Howard is coming back any time soon...

from Yahoo, on C. Lee...

LHP Cliff Lee became the fourth starting pitcher since 2000 to start and continue pitching into extra innings in the Phillies 1-0 loss to the Giants on Wednesday. Lee needed only 102 pitches to get through 10 innings; the Phillies lost in the 11th. Lee allowed seven hits in 10 innings, striking out seven while walking none. He joined teammate Roy Halladay (2003, 2007), Aaron Harang (2009) and Mark Mulder (2005) as the only starting pitchers since 2000 to pitch into extra innings.

the best lines from a royals blog...

"There is no serious redemptive value to losing every game of a ten game home stand. The only positives of the home stand is that Legionnaire's Disease didn't break out in the middle of the series.."

"Ned Yost has gone on and on about not panicking. And if you can't panic after losing 10 straight games at home, when the the hell can you panic? Might as well ban panic while you're at it. Maybe a bit of panic would help more than Ned's Buddy Bell impersonation and his droning about how they're gonna be better tomorrow and they're gonna win and take off. They'll stop drinking the gatorade of suck tomorrow honey, they swear."

"Ned Yost being fired won't change anything, but he's certainly doing his best at strengthening the case for his sudden unemployment. It took a Texas series with the Yuni drop and a runner moving from 1st to 2nd without any Royal noticing for Trey Hillman to get fired. After a 11 game losing streak, lord only knows what can get Ned fired as we approach their 9 game road trip."

"The Red Sox are proof of schadenfreude"

"Talent minus results is hype."

Delmon Young arrested in NYC

NEW YORK -- Detroit Tigers left fielder Delmon Young has been arrested on a hate-crime harassment charge
after police say he attacked a group of men and yelled anti-Semitic epithets.

Police say Young was standing outside of the Hilton New York, not far from Times Square. A group of about
four Chicago tourists staying there were approached by a panhandler wearing a yarmulke.

As the group walked up to the hotel doors, Young started yelling anti-Semitic epithets. Police say it's not clear
who he was yelling at, but he got into a tussle with one of the Chicago group, who sustained scratches to his
elbows.

The man, 32, refused medical attention, New York detective Joseph Cavitolo told the Detroit Free Press.

Police were called, and Young was arrested at 4 a.m. local time at 54th Street and 6th Avenue. He was
hospitalized at first because he was believed to be intoxicated.

Young faces a misdemeanor "aggravated harassment hate crime" charge and was being processed Friday,
Cavitolo said, according to the Free Press.

Cavitolo said he did not know if the alleged victim of the harassment, which was said to have happened around
2:30 a.m. ET, was Jewish.

Tigers president and general manager Dave Dombrowski had no comment to The Associated Press, and an email
sent to Young's agent wasn't immediately returned Friday.

"We are aware of the situation, however it is our club policy not to comment on pending legal matters," the Tigers
said in a statement Friday. "As we understand it, this is an allegation and we need to allow the legal process to take
its course. It would be inappropriate for us to comment further at this time. Per a provision in the Major League
Baseball Basic Agreement, any allegation that involves alcohol is referred to MLB's Employee Assistance Program."

It remains unclear whether Young would play Friday in the Tigers' 7:05 p.m. game against the Yankees. The Tigers
were home Thursday afternoon, when Young went 0-for-3 with a walk in a 5-4 loss to the Seattle Mariners. Young is
hitting .242 with one home run and five RBIs, is signed to a one-year contract for $6,725,000 and can become a free
agent after the season.

In 2006, Young was suspended for 50 games without pay by the International League for throwing a bat that hit a
replacement umpire in the chest. Young, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2003 amateur draft, was ejected in the first
inning after taking a called third strike. He lingered in the batter's box, walked away and then threw his bat end
over end at the umpire, hitting him in the chest.

@Region Philbis,
"DETROIT (AP) Delmon Young was suspended by Major League Baseball on Monday for seven days without pay following his arrest on a hate crime harassment charge last week in New York.

The commissioner's office said the suspension is retroactive to Friday, when Young was arrested after a late-night tussle at his hotel during which police say he yelled anti-Semitic epithets.

''Those associated with our game should meet the responsibilities and standards that stem from our game's stature as a social institution,'' Commissioner Bud Selig said in a statement. ''An incident like this cannot and will not be tolerated. I understand that Mr. Young is regretful, and it is my expectation that he will learn from this unfortunate episode.''

The statement from the commissioner's office also said that Young would be required to participate in a treatment program."

a tough blow for Mo...

Quote:
Mariano Rivera has torn ACL

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The incomparable career of New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera may have ended
Thursday night, not on a pitcher's mound but on the warning track at Kauffman Stadium before the game
had even begun.

Rivera, 42, the most successful closer of all time, suffered a torn ACL and a torn meniscus in his right knee
after he fell awkwardly to the ground while shagging a fly ball during batting practice before the Yankees'
game with the Kansas City Royals.

The 12-time All-Star was lifted by manager Joe Girardi and a coach and placed on a cart, driven off the field,
and needed assistance to walk into the clubhouse. Then he was whisked to a nearby hospital for an MRI,
which revealed the news.

And when he was asked some four hours after the injury and minutes after the Yankees had lost 4-3 to the
Royals if he thought he could come back from the injury, which is likely to require season-ending surgery,
Rivera said, "At this point, I don't know. At this point, I don't know.

"Going to have to face this first. It all depends on how the rehab is going to happen, and from there, we'll see."

He then fell silent, overcome with emotion and unable to speak.

Asked to describe his pain, Rivera said, "It's more mental than physical right now. I let the team down."

And he fell silent again, his eyes brimming with tears.

@Region Philbis,
The only upside to Mariano possibly retiring is that it would enable me to hate the Yankees without reservation, as he was the one player I truly admired through and through.

What a sad way to finish out his brilliant career. It's a big blow for the Yankees and a heart-breaking injury for Rivera.

Say it ain't so, Mo!

As a Red Sawx fan through-and-through but also a baseball fan, I can appreciate and recognize first-ballot-Hall-of-Fame greatness when I view it. Sad to see that happen.

today's baseball wandering thoughts are on little rules that I dislike now that I am in a fantasy league...

for the last month, the one that had me pissed off was the fielder's indifference.

I never remembered that being called until just recently. Did Lou Brock or Ricky (he still needs no last name) ever suffer a fielder's indifference?

is the base any less stolen when it draws no throw?

granted, it's still bad form to steal in the 9th if you are ahead.

anyways, today's rule that makes me indignant is the soup nazi double play RBI rule.

if you drive in a run whilst grounding into a double play, no RBI for you.

Starlin Castro.

@Region Philbis,
one run games are different...

anyways, today's rant is on my most hated relief pitcher in the modern era.

Chad Qualls.

I think he is Brad Lidge's step brother.

the phillies should know for sure by now...

he's lucky I live on the wide open prairies.
