Oh sure! You had to mention that!

What a crock the Marlins are.

Every day I read about about another ex-Marlin triumphing on the diamond.

I think something like 9 of those 10 consecutive losses were 1-run ball games, a statistical aberration that maybe one team per year suffers. Probably didn't warrant firing the manager.

That's baseball.

@Gargamel,

they didn't fire him -- he threw in the towel... although they might've been on the verge of doing so...

@Region Philbis,
The Marlins plot thickens with this recent game's loss, 'cause McKeon sat Ramirez down apparently for his problem base-running. Whether or not the base-running problems are due to Ramirez sore back or his notorious lack of hustle, remains unclear, but there's no clashing issue that non-Manny Ramirez has with the new interim coach.

“He’s going to get on everybody here,” Ramirez said. “If you don’t play hard, you’re not going to be here.”

@Ragman,

he's hitting a very un-Hanley-like .200 for the year.
i'd sit him, too...

Nationals manager Riggleman abruptly resigns

WASHINGTON -- Washington Nationals manager Jim Riggleman abruptly resigned from one of the hottest teams
in baseball Thursday, saying he felt the franchise wasn't committed to him over the long term.

Riggleman quit because the Nationals weren't prepared to pick up the option on his contract for next year,
further reinforcing his feeling that he was merely a placeholder manager until the team could find someone better.

"It's been brewing for a while," Riggleman said in a clubhouse that went from festive to stunned after completing
a sweep of the Seattle Mariners. "I know I'm not Casey Stengel, but I do feel like I know what I'm doing. It's not a
situation where I felt like I should continue on such a short lease."

His decision caught the franchise by surprise. General manager Mike Rizzo said he'll announce Friday who will manage
the team this weekend during a road series against the Chicago White Sox.

"Jim told me pregame today that if we wouldn't pick up his option, then he wouldn't get on the team bus today,"
Rizzo said. "I felt that the time wasn't right for me to pick up the option, and certainly today's conversation put to me
in the way it was put to me, you certainly can't make that decision in a knee-jerk reaction. It's too big of a decision."

The Nationals have won 11 of 12 and are above .500 this late in the season for the first time since 2005.

"We should be celebrating going to Chicago," Rizzo said. "I'm disappointed that this is a distraction, that this is not
thinking of the team first, that it is thinking of personal goals, thinking of personal things firsts. That's probably what
disappoints me the most."

What's stopping him? After all, that's what people in Chicago did after Riggleman was fired by the Cubs.

The college world series line up is set: defending champion South Carolina vs Florida. They are both from the strong SEC.
My team, Virginia, collapsed yesterday. They had good pitching again, but the hitting was weak and the guys lost to SC in the 13th inning as the fielders suddenly decided to throw the ball anywhere but to the base where the play should be. Rather pathetic ending for the 1st seed team, but I am told the 1st seed team rarely wins.

The Human Home Run a big hit in Lowell

The biggest hit at the Lowell Spinners baseball game last night didn't come off the bat of any of the aspiring ballplayers.

Instead, the latest installment of wacky minor-league baseball promotions came in the form of David "Cannonball" Smith,
69, being launched over the outfield fence. This comes only days after the Spinners set a world record for most people
flossing their teeth at once.

@Region Philbis,
Spinners games are always a gas. LeLacheur is a little gem of a park and
they've always got something going between innings. They've got a
playground area for the kids and a group outing barbeque area under
the stands.

. . . and they play baseball.

And it was cool that the fan who ended up with the ball so readily turned it over to Jeter.

@realjohnboy,

in exchange for the ball he got autographed swag and 4 tix to each remaining home game this year.
that's better than selling the ball, if you ask me...

@Region Philbis,
If he lives relatively close to Boston, yes. He and his kid will have some fantastic memories. And he will be able to treat a whole bunch of his friends to an outing to Fenway over the rest of the season.
