With the salary of the job I was cut from last month, I'd have to work 220 years in order to make John Lackey's salary.

Well, it's a good thing I don't work there any more, eh?

It's really depressing isn't it?!

@Region Philbis,
You think Lackey will make that much of a difference while the offensive side of the Sox goes somewhat stale?

Oh... yeah ... did they come that much closer to losing Jason Bay? <<sigh>>

@tsarstepan,

for starters, they now have 3 bonafied aces, plus dice-K and buchholz/wakefield.
then factor in the bullpen (they will have to replace wagner & saiito).
i would be surprised if they don't lead the majors in team ERA.

i think j-bay is a goner.
he turned down the home-town discount for more blingage elsewhere.

if the lowell trade happens, i'd like to see them go after adrian gonz, and move youk to 3rd...

@Region Philbis,
Who are they trying to trade Lowell for? I liked him! Solid third baseman defensive wise.

@Region Philbis,
I heard a Beltre rumor.

I think he is a better fit, and leave Youk at first.

@tsarstepan,

minor league catcher max ramirez -- they're saying he's good hit, bad field.
the problem with lowell is he was slow to begin with, and is even slower post-surgery.

looks like the deal may fall through...

@Region Philbis,
I guess they also need an inevitable Veritek replacement so the deal makes sense.

@Region Philbis,
Bay is headed to the Mets.

Quote:
Free-agent outfielder Jason Bay has reached agreement on a four-year, guaranteed $66 million contract with the New York Mets, a baseball source confirmed to ESPN.com Tuesday.

The agreement will become official once Bay passes a physical exam sometime next week, the source said. The deal includes a vesting option year that could increase Bay's overall payout to slightly more than $80 million over five years.

@Region Philbis,
I finally have a reason to route for a New York team.

Quote:
Fresh off trying to replace Manny Ramirez at Fenway Park, Jason Bay has reportedly agreed to move to the Mets to try and lift the sagging fortunes of a franchise playing in a new stadium that turned David Wright into a facsimile of Placido Polanco. At some point, Bay is going to start miss the joys of anonymity in Pittsburgh. Then again, anonymity doesn't pay the bills -- assuming you have $66 million in bills.

The Mets opened last season No. 10 in SportsNation's Power Rankings. By the end of the injury-marred mess of a season, they sat at No. 26. But last week, even before Bay signed, voters bumped the team back up to No. 18. Hope springs eternal when you have Big Apple money to spend.

Only 30 percent of voters think Bay is worth his new contract, but is he the best addition thus far among position players?

I wonder how much season tickets for the Pirates are running. I wouldn't mind moving to Pittsburgh and taking advantage of their misfortune.
