OK, I'm finally, after years and years of talking about it, about to get a smartphone again. (I had one of the earliest prototypes -- a "Wyndtell" email pager, made by RIM -- and then a regular but early Blackberry, but it died something like six years ago and I haven't had one since.)

The one I'm ready to get is a Blackberry Curve 8330. (Sozlet insists that I note that it's red.)

Before I pull the trigger and buy the thing I thought I'd send out feelers and see if anyone has one or has heard about it -- any yeas or nays.

It'd be an unlimited data plan for $29.99/ month, with voice rate of 20 cents/ minute (E.G. or sozlet may borrow it occasionally, but only very occasionally, and usually it wouldn't be used as a phone).

The phone itself would be free after rebates.

Here are more details and a review:

Thanks!

@sozobe,
I've been using smartphones religiously for a decade now, and in all that time only a couple of them have blown me away: iPhone and Google Android.

I have an iPhone now, and it's so much better than any other smartphone I've owned. I think the Google Android phones will be eventually better but right now it's the best smartphone on the block.

Downsides vs Blackberry is that it lacks a tactile keyboard, and typing on it was a bit annoying initially (but I got the hang of it within a day or so and it ends up not being much worse than any mobile keyboard).

You can't really go wrong with that Blackberry except in that there are other phones out there that are better (including the Palm Pre and the ones I mentioned above).

@Robert Gentel,
Great, thanks! If it's good enough I think I'm ready to go for it, since the price is right. I don't need the best, just serviceable (and cheap).

@sozobe,
I hope the browser is up to snuff, mobile internet that isn't painful is actually pretty cool.

@Robert Gentel,
It's arrived!

omg so cool.

Technology has, err, progressed in the last six years. Just a tad.

The battery was low so I didn't get to do as much browser stuff as I wanted (it's charging now) but looked quite serviceable. Whee!

Ha! The first chinks in your armor, before you even have the thing. This is so going to be a family phone!

@Thomas,
So far so good. Unlimited data plan (all the email and web browsing I want for $30/mo, but 20 cents a minute for calls. No calls yet.)

And the more I figure out the more I love this thing. (Tooling around on it in a hotel now.) Super-useful.
