An aside - I was once at a Carnival celebration at a university in Mexico. We arrived late, say 10 at night, and the place was nearly empty. Time passed and people came in, eventually an amazing wall to wall crowd of people ready to dance the night away. At some point two bands with tubas bounded in..
I can almost hear it from this far away in time passed.

German Mexicans popularized the tuba in banda music back in the 1890's in Mexico.
They brought it over with the polka.
