Pierre was a successful Russian businessman who owned a distillery in Moscow in the late 1700's. His surname is still a familiar one today . What is it?
P.S I immediately thought of Pierre Smirnoff (vodka) but the date doesn't fit, he was born much later than this. Are there any other famous Russian Pierres who gave their name to something?
Perhaps you should be looking for Pyotr Smirnov (Pyotr Arsenievich Smirnov (1831-1898), the founder of the company that made Smirnoff vodka. There's no hits for any Pierre Smirnov in any search I performed.
@Ragman,
Perhaps you're barking up the wrong GREAT FUN QUIZ as you are NOT supposed to cheat on it.
@sophocles,
your timeframe is off. Read the following:
"Vodka was pretty much unknown in the United States until Pierre Smirnoff (who fled Russia following the Revolution) sold the rights to his family's vodka formula to a Russian émigré living in America. "
@sophocles,
Perhaps sophocles is also a 'detective' ?
