@shewolfnm,
free concerts all over town during the summer

http://gonyc.about.com/cs/music/a/summermusic.htm

free movies outdoors in various parks (I like Bryant Park)

take fruit/muffins/water - you'll always meet interesting people at these events

(again, I recommend Yelp)

I totally disagree. Coney Island kicks ass! However, I will admit, it's not for everyone. But if you like burlesque shows, colorful characters, and a freakshow/ghetto-carnival atmosphere, then you might just like it.

oh, and the New York bagel

I like a New York bagel, but if I wanted something I really can't get a good example of elsewhere I'd go for a bialy.

http://www.kossarsbialys.com/

http://www.kossarsbialys.com/bialy%20making.htm

It's not just that it's hard to find a good bialy, it's that it is a dying food art.

Arepas in New York are fantastic, but they are becoming more and more available as the cultural balance in New York changes.

Get a bialy while you still can.

One of my favourite breakfasts on the UES is egg and smoked salmon on a toasted bialy from Hot and Crusty. I'm good for about 8 hours of walking on one of those. Protein, carbs, flavour, texture.

@ehBeth,
I know I'm carping on the Yelp thing, but I can't imagine travelling to New York without Yelping my options.

I think it's the most useful place to get information, ask questions, get party invites Cool

I don't know the place itself, but I do know that that area is decent. A little bit North and East of there it gets a little shaky, but all the things you'll want to do will be way South anyway. It's probably about a fifteen minute subway ride from Times Square.

Oh, there's also a really good dive bar not too far from Times Square called Rudy's. If you want to drink cheap without having to flirt with some stranger who is trying to get in your pants, this is the place. Plus they give away free hot dogs if you're hungry!

Washington Square Park is wonderful in a lot of ways

I couldn't agree more. A lot of street musicians/performers, great people-watching...just a real solid place for free entertainment. Plus they just re-opened it after a big renovation, so it looks a little cleaner now and there are far fewer drug dealers walking around asking, "Smoke? Smoke?"

I finally looked up the ICP - International Center for Photography. I don't know pros and cons on the place at all - but I'm a Magnum Blog follower to some extent, and if I were nearby and knew about it, I'd go in...

http://www.icp.org/

Me, I like smallish galleries that show photos, and I've seen some wonderful shows. I dragged a2kers to one in San Francisco, which I remember most for having a few a2kers arguing in the hall and some others gallery roaming. That was some time before some of us gathered at the coppola cafe, I forget the name of it.

During the first a2k meet in Chicago, a near horde of us went through the art museum, some assertively individually, like walter, rjb, me, eva, and some as a group, which I think JPB led, since she knows the museum well. I ended up in the basement with a photo show that knocked my socks... before getting back to the group.

I know from nothing about the New York Met photo collection, but I figure they have a good one.

@ossobuco,
Adds, Salgado was one of the photographers that I appreciated seeing his work in person, but not the only one.

11. Veronica’s Kitchen is a Jamaican-food cart serving jerk chicken and curry shrimp.

12. Pyramid Coffee is a covered café with tables and chairs; not exactly Shake Shack caliber, but you can get sandwiches and snacks.

13. A produce stand will materialize here just as soon as the eggplants and tomatoes from the adjacent three-acre organic farm, run by Red Hook’s Added Value, ripen later this month.

14. The food truck George’s has everything from hot dogs and gyros to roast-beef sandwiches and Philly cheesesteaks.

with a couple of subway tokens, you could get a great $20 day here

Not at all. Don't like it or the views or well anything.
I wouldn't be excited if I had a chance to go there again.
I didn't mention it to Derek at Toronto when brendalee and I were there on Tuesday.
Nope.

Well, I sure hope you stay home -- or at least come later. Any more detailed plans on what you're going to do and when? I want to make sure I stay out of your way.
