I have been using one as needed for years. I love it. I aslo frequently recommend them to others (and get funny looks in return).

I was talking to a doctor from India the other day. He says he uses one all the time.

I'm going to try it. I was ordering something off drugstore.com, and got a $10 discount coupon code, so I splured and order one.

I was going to use kosher salt in mine.

@chai2,
Okay, since everybody else seems to be in the know, I'll ask. What the hell is a neti pot?

Could I have used one without knowing it?

@Reyn,
doubtful, it's a device for cleansing the nasal passage

I think we had a big old thread about this last winter. Yes, they work great - once you get over the concept. I use a miniature clay teapot I've had for years, but anything that holds water with a small spout is fine. My husband says it's a poor man's version of waterboarding, but he does it every time he has a cold.

@chai2,
We've had threads that involve neti pots at least twice a winter for the last three or four years.

Some people don't bother with the fancy pot. There are other ways of getting the saline solution up your nose, including just snorting it.

@ehBeth,
I'd sooooo rather not.
S'not an inviting idea.
(I've read the threads, get why it can be good, but still...)

I don't think snorting water would work for me.

I'm the type that starts flailing about helplessly when I get water up my nose at the pool.

God, I'm embarrassing to look at when that happens

AAAHSGGR! WATER UP MY NOSE!!! IT HURTS IT HURTS IT HURTS. Little kids are like "what's the big deal?"

I could handle it in controlled laboratory conditions, like my bathroom.

In that case, I definitely want to be there when you try it for the first time. Yes, I do. Email me.

@ehBeth,
Yep. I've harped about the wonders of saline lavage ever since our ENT told us about it (three years ago?). We use nasal aspirators and then make our own saline. (1 pint warmed-up water, 1 teaspoon kosher salt, pinch baking soda.) Place nasal aspirator in nostril, aim at the back of your head. Squirt.

Definitely takes some getting used to, but it really really helps.

Chai, it definitely does NOT hurt. It's a bit squirmy and gaggy at first, but not painful due to the fact that you're using saline (not chlorinated water).

Kosher salt is fine - be sure to use non-iodine salt. Since you don't like chlorine, try using distilled/filtered water. And make sure all the salt is dissolved!

Looks far too much like waterboarding for me to even contemplate trying it.

Laughing

oh god....

2 days a row now, HOURS after I did my irrigation, I've lean over to pick something up, and 5 or 6 HUGE drops of salt water will pour out of my nose! What? Must be water that's trapped up behind my eyeball or something.

Luckily, I've been alone both times. Otherwise, I would have have some 'splainin to do.

Guess I'll have to stand on my head for awhile afterwards
