@Setanta,
Thank you! Now I see! Smile

In answer to your question: we are talking about OCD because we're concerned we've been posting rather ... compulsively.

This is what Aunt Jemima used to look like:

https://e-folio.web.virginia.edu/E-folio-Archive2/1/EDIS542/2004Fall-1/cs/UserItems/Resources/cng9r_auntjemima.jpg

To us, an obviously racist image, it dates from the 1890s.

This is what the old girl (over hundred) looks like now:

http://auraticoutmoded.files.wordpress.com/2009/02/aunt_jemima.jpg

In the bad old days of 60s and 70s militant activism, it was assumed that Uncle Ben was an equally offensive image, and just as fictional as Aunt Jemima.

This is what Uncle Ben has always looked like on the boxes of rice:

http://www.unclebens.fr/images/saga/saga_ub.jpg

Just because you have a smiling black man with white hair not any reason to assume that Uncle Ben is an Uncle Tom, or that he is fictional. But the Political Rectitude Gestapo foamed at the mouth in the 70s over both Aunt Jemima (justified) and Uncle Ben (utter burro shitto).

@msolga,
OK, that was not an exactly an answer to my question, but it now occurs to me that you folks are referring to obsessive-compulsive disorder.

@Setanta,
You know, I prefer the old Aunt Jemima. She seems more honest, open & less contrived than Aunt Jemima #2. But, mind you, I'm posting far from the US, so I'm responding in a more detached way than you folk would be. And Uncle Ben looks like a dignified & wise grandfather.

@msolga,
The early Aunt Jemima boxes had definitely racist content though. This is one of the images i found when looking for an image:

http://contexts.org/socimages/files/2008/09/20070507-aunt-jemima-ad.gif

Here's another:

http://blog.lib.umn.edu/perry032/impossible/jemima-day-11-01-1945-083.jpg

As you can see, the content includes racist stereotypes about how black people talk.

I agree with you that the image of Uncle Ben is an innocent one. But he got caught in the crossfire when the Political Rectitude Gestapo fired up their righteous indignation.

Calling a black man an Uncle Tom is a grave insult, and a reference to Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel Uncle Tom's Cabin. It means a black man who truckles to white men--a lickspittle. The idea of the PC Gestapo was to claim that the Uncle Ben image was an Uncle Tom image.

LAWSEE? what the hell dat mean?

I knows dat its CHILLUN and not CHILLUNS. Notin wrong with TEMPTILATIN.

Man, oh man its almost an embarrassment to read **** like that, but hell I remember the Amos n Andy show on TV . My dad would watch it and roar and He would explain to me

"Thats just the way niggers talk kid"

and my mom would agree and thatd be another lesson about racial stereotyping that I learned in a Catholic Home.

You guys think Aunt Jemima was racist advertising? (Well yeah, those later ones the Doggy Person posted, were...)

But cop this! Pelaco (shirt) advertisement from Oz (1936 to 1950-something.) Terrible!Shocked :

Cotton talk huh....so you guys are saying that everytime I open my mouth I'm bein a racialist....I shouldn't say chillins no mo...my uncle will be devastated, dat's one o his fav-o-rite words....he did pick cotton as a young man, as did most of his family...side by side with black folk, in Soutease Mizzura, and Nort Ease Ar-kin-saww....but I'll go tell him people really don't talk that way, so he should stop it right now.

@msolga,
EXPLAIN the cultural significance of the Pelaco ad.
1What does the phrase signify

2ISsit the fact that and aboriginal is even wearing a shirt and is telling us that it feels like he has nothing on?

Im having just as difficult a time with the reference and your and debs response , just as much as you were confused about Sets use of uncle BEn and Aunt Jemima.
